Lose your car keys? Want to find your child who is outside playing? Can't locate your TV remote? Then read this... Snifferdog is a new sport for dogs and their people. Incorporating obedience skills along with problem puzzle solving skills in a race against the clock. Dogs are trained to locate and identify a particular scent. The human learns to put the dogs nose in the right place to find the article. Once the teams learn the scent work skills Snifferdog the Snifferdog class starts. ABOUT LAURA TOTIS: Laura has been working with dogs and their people since 1978. She focuses on obedience as developing enough communication with her dogs to be able to do fun things with them. Laura is a member if the International Association of Dog Behavior Councilors (IADBC) and an instructor/evaluation coordinator for Law Enforcement Training Specialists. Her dogs help the community through work as Search And Rescue dogs. She has some of the original lost pet detection dogs in the country. Laura developed the new sport SnifferDog that is designed to bring the excitement of search detection work to pet dogs and their people. First, you will learn how to work with your dog's nose. Learn how to teach your dog to find items, people and pets.
COME TO THE INTRODUCTORY SNIFFER DOG SEMINAR Come on out and have fun with your dog! Can you and your dog run a course? At SNIFFERDOG events you and your dog work as a team to locate a search area and find your target. It's a race against the clock with the opportunity for plenty of socialization afterwards.
What is it? Scent work as a game for people and their dogs. If you enjoy walks in the park and your dog enjoys sniffing -- then Snifferdog Sport is the game for you. Snifferdog Sport is all about training your dog for scent work as a game. You learn the same exercises we use to train detection dogs such as search and rescue dogs. Snifferdog Sport events combine scent work games associated with finding hidden articles (i.e., objects).
Does my dog need to be a working dog to do Snifferdog Sport? Nope! Snifferdog Sport is for the weekend warrior. It is for people and dogs that like to have fun together.
My dog is an obedience dog school drop out can he play? Sure. You need to be able to control your dog, but Snifferdog Sport is played on leash so your dog does not need a lot of obedience skills. You and your dog will develop a relationship that may help to improve obedience work, also. But Snifferdog Sport is not about looking good in obedience. It is about exercising your dog's brain and letting him use his nose to find hidden articles. If we use detection exercises to train my dog, can he used as a detection dog after training? Not without a lot more work. Snifferdog Sport is about having fun with your dog - not about working. Snifferdog Sport might give you an idea if scent work is a discipline you and your dog want to pursue, but search and rescue dogs and detection dogs have intense training requirements that go beyond what we do in Snifferedog Sport.
