- Have you always wondered what you want to do when you graduate?
- Have you thought about the difference between working in a bank, a gaming company or a startup?
- Are you worried about all the talk of grads finding it hard to find work and what that will mean to you?
- Whether you should spend your time developing Java, Ruby or HTML5?
Now is your chance to find out, from the people that know. You may well have heard the buzz about the GDC Meet a Mentor series of events, in association with RecWorks. This is our first open event, it is being held at Kings College London and is open to all students with an interest in software.
This is a chance for you to meet a variety of senior developers working in industry at the moment, hear their story and ask questions. It will be a 'speed dating' style event in groups of 5-8 with each mentor having 10-15 minutes to tell their story and have an honest discussion about life in industry. We have an amazing line up including people from the BBC, Betfair, Banks and startups. Senior developers, entrepreneurs, CTOs, open source enthusiasts and an experienced recruiter will be there to give you advice and answer your questions and give you the inside scoop on career options, the software industry, job applications and different job positions.
Word from the founder of the GDC - Barry Cranford
I'm deeply passionate about this event and I just wanted to take the time to write to you to explain. This is one of the most rewarding events that I've had the privelidge of being involved in and would invite you all to have a look at the details: http://www.meetup.com/grad-dc/events/58387482/

Over the last few months we have been working on building the GDC Meet a Mentor programme. The concept is that you get a chance to meet experts, some of the best software developers in London, to discuss what you should do with your career. This is not a sales rep or a marketing consultant here to give you a sales pitch about their company values, this is a group of incredibly successful people who are giving up their time to share their experiences with you. Choices you make now will have a massive impact on the rest of your career, those choices can often be incredibly complicated. Many people use interviews to do this, and apply to a series of jobs to find out what they're about - but you are wasting opportunities and time doing this - employers seriously dislike interviewing candidates that don't know what they want and LOVE meeting people that have a clear idea. What you need to do is speak to people actually working in the industry, as many people as possible. Speaking to a range of people will give you a good idea what the industry offers, what it is like, which area you would be most happy/suitable for and some idea of what you should do next to get there.
Anything is possible in the software industry, whether you already have a dream and want to earn 150k a year, work in a bank, a gaming company or a startup, move to Silicon Valley, start a tech business, get a PhD or, as with most people that haven't started their career, have not got the first clue what you're going to do when you graduate, you will find answers. You will meet people that can help explain things in your terms, make recommendations on people you should meet or follow, companies to consider, where to start, how to apply and any other question you have.
The event will have an unusual format, rather than a formal presentation, you will work in small groups that will encourage engagement with each mentor. You are welcome to get involved and ask lots of questions or sit back and just listen to others' questions. Hopefully you will get the chance to meet/listen to 5-6 mentors if not more.
Any questions please do let me know.
