This is the start of our new series - "Best of What's New" where we periodically explore new restaurants and wine bars that have opened in the last few months around the DC metro.
Our pick for this event is "Baby Wale", Tom Power's second project a Wine Bar with a casual vibe, offering a varied Wine list and small plates as the dining theme.
Tom Power's known for the elegant and sleek restaurant "Corduroy" keeps to his material theme, as "Wale" pertains to the smallest weave of corduroy and is meant to be “the opposite of Corduroy.”
The Food menu at "Baby Wale" carries the distinct signature of Power’s resume and includes dishes like the lumpia, the Filipino equivalent of spring rolls and mozzarella “porcupine” which uses a technique refined by the acclaimed chef Michel Richard, for whom Power cooked in Baltimore and Philadelphia. The spiky appetizer — shredded phyllo encasing buffalo mozzarella — is set on a plate with two bright sauces, one basil, the other tomato, both intriguing for their clarity.
The selection of Wines include fine picks of Old World Wines to pair with the varied Food flavors.
The Wine bar has an artistic, urban rustic ambiance with high ceilings, skylights, and splashes of color, from reds to turquoise.
