Joie de Vivre : Picking Strawberries and Sipping Wine

As we get closer to the beginning of the days of summer with sunny blue skies, bright sun and green grass, its time to begin planning our outdoor events.

Our first of many outdoor events, shall be a visit to the countryside with a late morning start on wishfully a bright Saturday morning, where we will stop by a local farm, just in time of the year, where the Strawberries are waiting to be picked and Wine to be sipped on a hilltop patio with great views of the surrounding landscape of mountains and a far glimpse of the city skyline.

Our venue for the farm pickings will be the Great Country Farms which is a 200 acre working farm situated at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains outside the village of Bluemont, VA.

The strawberries should be ripe and ready for picking late May and early June.

Besides at the farm store you could purchase a wide range of seasonal fresh produce and products, ranging from local honey, jams, dips, pottery, gift ideas and much more.

After we have completed our strawberry pickings, we shall head over to the Bluemont winery, which is half a mile from the farm and perched on top of the hill, with some of the best views of the countryside and the Blue Ridge mountains.

Bluemont is a small winery, with an average of 5000 crafted cases of wine produced each year. The winery also offers a variety of cheese and charcuterie  besides sandwiches for purchase.

So join in for our visit to the countryside and for a day of Picking Strawberries and Sipping Wine.

Please manage your RSVP’s responsibly. Though we will allow for a larger group of members to join us for this event, we still need to plan and manage RSVP's as there is only a limited seating space at the winery and late cancellations and no shows will only deny others from attending.

We will meet at 10:30 am at the Great Country Farms, and tentatively plan to head over to the Winery at around 12:00 pm.

As always we will do our best to coordinate rides from nearby Metros, so if you need a ride please add a comment.

We will still go with the original plan of meeting at the farm at 10:30 am since we have already made plans and then go to the BLUEMONT winery from there. Sorry about the late notice regarding NO STRAWBERRIES but we can still stop by the farm store and purchase other stuff from the farm and then head over to the winery.

Those that want to join us later, at the winery are welcome to do so. It's a beautiful day so let's make the most of it

Just a reminder to all attending "Picking Strawberries and Sipping Wine" event this Saturday, to Please arrive on time at 10:30 am since we have a large group attending and we would not want to keep those that arrive on time waiting on others. We will meet at the farm, Visitors entrance area. Also if you arrive late or would prefer flexible timing, you are welcome to do things at your own pace and meet the group at Bluemont winery later for the Wine event. I will post our location in the comments section, but the winery is small and we should have no problems finding the group.

Fingers crossed, the Weather looks great for Saturday for what should be a fun day in the country side.

Those that need a ride can contact Pat or Mary directly, and thanks to them for helping with the carpool.

I'm so excited, I'm also off the wait list!!
I'll have room for 2 or 3 interesting in carpooling also.
I live next to Grosvenor Metro/Red Line in N.Bethesda.

      June 5, 2014

  • Pat

Now off the waitlist, Yay!! Happy to give others a ride as needed. I am in Sterling, have room for 3 in my car. I'm closest to the West Falls Church Metro.

    1 · June 3, 2014

    • Pat

Sure, Kahlila. Will you use the Metro? Or do you live near Sterling? Please use my personal email for now, it's a little easier: [masked] See you Saturday!

      June 5, 2014

    • Pat

Nora and Kahlila: Happy to give you both a ride. We will need about an hour from the West Falls Church Metro to get to the farm, so I will be at the Metro by about 9:15. I drive a black Audi A4. Please let me know if this is where you will arrive, thanks. See you Saturday morning!

      June 5, 2014

The usual reminder to all those members that have RSVP'd, Please update your RSVP if your plans of attending has changed, or likely to change as we do have some members on the wait list that would like a spot.
Late cancellations prevents others from attending and difficult for us to plan this events.

Looking forward to seeing you all and having a fun day in the countryside.

I'm waitlisted, am based in Sterling & willing to pick up & drive. I can fit 3 others comfortably, I'll keep checking status. Sounds like a great event!

I can take 2 people to the Farm in my car, but the problem is that I will stay with friends in the area, and not return that same night.

    1 · May 19, 2014

  • Kris H.

I am wait-listed, but would also hope for a ride from a west side metro - and will offer up a (closed) bottle of wine of the driver's choice to the driver that can take +2 in the car. I'm sure I'll find another hitchhiker to split the bottle's cost with me. Last winery was a great great day - looking forward to this one.

As we get closer to the event, we will certainly have more details on carpooling based on comments from those that need a ride and those that can offer a ride from a nearby metro.

I would also like to avoid driving to this event. I live in Alexandria and am willing to travel via metro for a ride.

Hi! I need a ride to this event - can I carpool with anyone? I live in DC but can meet up at a metro stop in virginia if that would be easier.

Like Christine, I'm a DCer hoping to get a ride from DC or a metro station. Thanks!
