One of the best places to trek in India - Matheran

Matheran is a small hill station in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is located around 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. It is one of the most ecologically sensitive hill stations in the country and no form of motoroised transport is allowed. The name Matheran means either "forest on top" or "mother forest". Read more here:

Moving around in Matheran

The only modes of transport, on the red soiled roads, are on horseback or by man-pulled rickshaw or on foot. It is one of the few places in the world where all motorised vehicles are banned which makes the place unique. That calls for trekking all the way.

18° 55' N, 73° 15' E

At an elevation of about 800m (2,625 ft) above Mean Sea Level.

5000 acres or eight sq miles

Matheran has cool and moderate climate. During monsoon rainfall is heavy and it provides a different charm. The climate after the rains is very pleasant.

Level with sparse undulations. The topmost layer of rock is of soft porous iron-clay with abundant small black boulders. The surface is covered by red soil with less humus.

    2) No jeans, since it becomes heavy once you get wet. Wear T shirts, light track suits, or three fourths or shorts.
Avoid cotton as the same will get soggy and hold the moisture.
We do not have a problem of leeches, so no worry on that count.

    3) Carry as little luggage as possible. The hotel provides bed - so sleeping bags are not needed. You need to carry your own towels and a small bar of soap.

    4) A small sling bag with a water bottle, juice and snacks is what you will need from Ambewadi to Matheran. A four hour trek. Avoid fried stuffs & biscuits as they will make you more thirsty.

    5) Carry your spare dresses in a plastic wrapper in your bag to avoid getting wet by rain. Carry another plastic bag to put your wet clothes. Forget about drying clothes, it does not happen at Matheran.

Dear All, please start practicing on your fitness. Start jogging/long walk, preferably on inclined roads/ tread mill to get fit for this trek.

Other pre-requisites for the trek you might want to consider.

    1) Canvas shoes, brown or dark colour preferred - since Matheran has red soil. If you get a white one, it will be brown by the time you end the trek :) So, buy one this weekend, if you do not have one.And start practsing with them, You can try Lal Bazar - it will cost around Rs 150 a pair. No sports shoes, since it will get soggy and you cannot wear it. Please carry slippers, which you can wear at the hotel. Ladies can also carry along loafers. Always carry an additional pair of footwear. During the Nov 2010 trek, three guys lost their shoe soles.
