Introduction

Mahjong is one of my passions! I'm a 3rd generation player and teacher of Riichi, Cantonese with Honk Kong Scoring, Wright-Patterson and American styles. Like I said ... PASSON!

How did you hear about our meetup?

I created this meetup in honor of my Filipino Mom who passed away in 2004. She was master player at Wright-Patterson and National Mah Jong Leage styles. I inherited her passion for the game.

What areas are you willing to drive to in order to play?

Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek are most convenient for me but I'll venture out to Buckhead, Marietta, Cumming and Woodstock too. If someone wants to join our meeting and start a group within 2 hours of Atlanta, I'll drive out to help get it started!

If you've played Mahjong before, what is your preferred style (i.e., Cantonese, Riichi, National Mah Jongg League)?

I am an advanced player in American/NMJL, Cantonese/HKOS, Japanese/Riichi styles and Wright-Paterson styles. Riichi is my preferred style of play because of its novelty and strategy. I really enjoy playing American style because it has intricacies that make it challenging in a way unlike any other style. I also enjoy playing Wright-Patterson style because it brings back wonderful childhood memories. Cantonese style is what I recommend most to new players because it's the easiest to learn.

How long have you been playing Mahjong and how would you define your experience level (e.g., new, beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert)?

I learned how to play Mah Jong in '73 with Wright-Patterson/Air Force rules and have been playing ever since. Over the years, I've learned how to play American/NMJL, Cantonese/HKOS and Japanese/Riichi styles. I'm currently studying World Mahjong Competition Rules - this will take a while to master!

We expect our members to read and adhere to our Club Charter (http://www.meetup.com/greateratlantamahjong/pages/Club_Charter/). Did you read it? If yes, please include the date as this document has occasional updates.

Yes, 11/17/2012

  • I'm trying to decide if I want to learn Cantonese or American since it looks like lessons on both are coming up... (I know Japanese is coming up, too, but from what I've read, I don't think that's the one for me.) Which one is easier? And which one is more popular? Thanks a bunch! :o)
