Happy Memorial Day Great Works Readers!
I hope you have all had a relaxing weekend to recharge your mental, physical, and emotional batteries.
I did with a great weekend up in the Catskills. It gave me the rest I needed to clear my mind and even the energy to explore some new book that piqued my curiosity. One book which is particularly appropriate for all book clubs, especially ours, and especially especially for the upcoming short but dense Heart of Darkness meetup discussion, is "How to Talk about Books you Haven't Read" by Pierre Bayard.
No longer will you have to avoid coming to our discussion groups for the simple transgression of not reading the book! The book not only outlines the various degrees of non-reading, ( from skimming, glossing, dabbling, to not even cracking the cover) but makes a strong case for the superiority of non-reading over reading itself!! In many cases it allows the discussor to speak more knowingly about the books than those that have actually read them. So I implore you, all you ambitious readers, that invariably DON't show up to the discussion because you never actually got around to reading book, do not be ashamed, do not bear fearful. you can discuss the book with the best of them, even better!
Interesting, huh? and what's more, just from glancing at the title and table of contents of ""how to talk about books you haven't read" you will have ingested more than enough information to knowingly talk about this at our next meeting without having read the book! ;)
