Share and Share Alike: New Applications for Collaboration & Resource Optimization
Hyperconsumption and hyper-usage are leading to unnecessary waste of energy and other natural resources. And much of that consumption is for stuff we do not need. Case in point: the average power drill purchased for a home only gets used 6 to 13 minutes in its lifetime.
A simple concept is at the forefront of reversing this trend. Sharing — or collaborative consumption — brought about by advances in social technology could be the next great revolution in how we do business. AirBnB and Zip Car are leading the way, developing models that facilitate sharing, borrowing, trading and social interaction while mitigating waste. For this event, we will highlight start-ups capitalizing on this naturally sustainable business model where access trumps possession.
