I can't say how glad I am for building up the courage to make it out last night and even play (my first ever open mic shindig)! Not only was there an eclectic amount of talent, but the atmosphere was perfect. It was great meeting all of you wonderful souls and I hope to do this again soon! p.s. if you have never performed I assure you that this is the PERFECT place to spread your shaky wings...special thanks to Broadway Steve and all the wonderful people I had the fortune of conversing with last night.

My asthma was kicking but I did my best and learned a few things after watching video of myself. I think a good vocal trainer would help me a great deal. Seeing oneself on video is highly recommended. It's how I can see and think about where I need to improve.

Everyone thanks again for coming out. It was a blast seeing everyone and it's awesome seeing guitar is alive and well in this day and age of pre-fab music! Hope to see everyone in July!

Tonight a lot of the regulars were not there ( missed you guys) but in attendance were several extremely talented new faces .It's great to see performers come out of the shadow and gravitate to our venue.Several experienced an open mic for the first time and really added value to the evening.Inspiring.

How good at guitar should u be? I know that should b obvious, but still want to know?

    June 11, 2013

    • John P.

Marie, you don't have to be an expert. Just be motivated enough to come onstage. We'll supply the emotional support and encouragement :)

      1 · June 11, 2013

this sounds like a lot of fun. I'd be coming in from jersey, so I'll try to make it. I saw the past photos and it looks like there is a separate area to just hang out and jam?
I will bring my guitar, but probably not play onstage because,
    1. it's got no pickup or mic,
    2. i'm not prepared.

    June 11, 2013

    • John P.

Charles, don't worry about the pickup or mic. We have a microphone to amplify guitars. Unfortunately, there is no separate area just to hang out and jam.

I'll make an excuse here cause I canj't there. My lung experienced damage from breathing in wood dust last year and are slowly healing, but I'll give singing a shot anyway. Ever since my uncle passed away last year and was pro, I've had an interest in playing and singing. I'm interested in learning.

Before people learned to be entertained they used to entertain each other. Its really fun to be in a room filled with people who play instruments and sing. If you bring your smart phone you'll be able to keep up with all the things your friends are saying about you behind your back.

I cannot make you famous,in fact I can almost insure your continued obscurity will be supported. I WILL try to get you comfortable in front of the mic and the new sound guy will try to get you sounding as good as possible as quickly as possible. It is a bar so while you're not encouraged to drink you can get a beverage and most evenings there is a resident bar tender downstairs which is a convenience as open mics go. I've been going to open mics forever and I come back to this one because it has as good a vibe as any I have attended. The diversity of talent, the diversity of cultures represented, the variety of styles and especially the friendly non-clique welcome of this one sets it apart.
An open mic is a training ground for performers at ALL levels. This is a NO EXCUSES PERMITTED open mic. We understand this may be your first open mic or your first in fifteen years.Whether you do your best or your worst you get a good hand when you're done.

@ Bway Steve: How very descriptive and truthful. We find a corner and play to drown our sorrows or to express our excitement for and within ourselves. It is only in front of a crowd that we really get to hear ourselves as others hear us. We are able to let our inhibitions down for just a moment and know there is no one going to criticize us.

Very good point.Watching others allows you to see yourself as a "human being" performing even better than say a self-shot video where it's still more about you tweaking the song. Observing others allows you to make adjustments as to how you sit or stand, what kind of material to choose, lots of other things that come to play in solo-acoustic performing. There are many parallels to say an Olympic figure skating performance. The music plays, you get on the ice and do your best. If you fall , you resume your performance minimizing the interruption and finish out as best you can. Everyone is shocked when a skater falls and is quite sympathetic. They get a nice round of applause as they leave the ice. No "winner " at an open mic.Everyone moves their craft ahead.

Is this good for bringing electric guitar or only acoustic? Will there be mics? If I can make it I could even maybe bring an electric bass. I'm not certain I could make it. How long will this last?

    May 26, 2013

    • Charlie A.

Hi Jenny. You can bring either an acoustic or electric or bass. There's a complete sound set up with mics, amps and DI boxes. We also have our own sound guy. The evening generally starts between 7-7:30 and usually ends about 10:30 - 11. It's 5 bucks a person

      May 26, 2013

    • Charlie A.

And guests and relatives are asked to kick in 5 bucks, too. We have to pay the sound guy and offset other group expenses. Hope you can make it.

Who's ready for La Bamba? I'll be performing a Ritchie Valens classic at Ella. You're in for a treat!
