August Open Mic!!!

Hi everyone. Our August MeetUp is set. Please note it is one week earlier than usual because of scheduling conflicts at Ella Lounge, but we are good to go for Wednesday, August 8th. SIGN UP STARTS AROUND 6:30PM. The playing and other good stuff starts around 7PM.

We'll be downstairs like last time's extraordinary meetup. Please remember 5 bucks in the bucket from everyone to pay for Stefan our sound guy and to help keep the group going. See you there.

Hey fellow guitarists! I am looking forward to tomorrow nights open mic. This will be my first meet up with everyone. Hope to meet some great people and hear some great music! Can someone fill me in on how this all works?

Bring a guitar (but no extra geegaws like backing tracks or loopers that take a long time to set up). Buy a drink. Play two songs. Buy a drink. Listen to other people play two songs. Buy a drink. ;)

I second everything that Jay says! If you're playing, try to get there on the earlier side. We will try to move smoothly from one performer to the next so that everyone gets to play at a reasonable hour, but it looks like we're expecting a crowd! See you soon!

Thanks for clarifying, both Charlie and Emily. Emily, I believe what you are saying about how many songs is that each group of performers that plays together gets 2 songs for the whole group (not per person), and that if there is time after everyone else has played, then they might get to do more songs.

    • emily f.

it's that each person can do 2 songs, either solo or as a group, and then when everyone who would like to play has played, we'll go for a second round. in other words, if you're a member of two groups, you'll play with your first group, and then when everyone has played, you'll have the option to play again. the goal is to make sure that everyone who wants to play can get on stage at least once before other members have a second go.

    To Emily, Jean-Paul or Charlie,

I have 2 questions about open mics:

First, I was wondering what is going to happen re: youtube. I saw a request for volunteers. Are the performers going to be videotaped and put on youtube now? Have they already been (I noticed someone taping last time, but thought maybe it was his personal tape)?
If that is what is planned, can we "opt out" of being filmed or put on youtube because many people are still working out theirs skills, stagefright, etc. and come to the group for a safe place to try stuff out and youtube is about as public as you can go.
Can you please clarify all this? Thanks very much.

And Emily, when you say for duos/trios, please sign up for only 2 songs per person, you mean that each person in the group gets 2 songs? That is how it was in the past. Is that still what you mean, so that 2 people would get 4 songs?
    Thanks for clarifying these things.

Hi Angelica. No worries about showing up on YouTube. That was a personal video. And even if it wasn't, it's all strictly voluntary. In fact we don't even have an official group videographer yet (any volunteers?).

Charlie you are quick! man are you good. I just saw your post, but added my two cents above... Angelica- let us know if this helps answer your questions.

  • emily f.

hi Angelica- thanks for asking these questions because I'm sure you're not the only one wondering!
    1) starting in August- each performer will go on stage once, for 2 songs, and when everyone has played who would like to, then you'll be able to opt in to play again. This is so that everyone has a chance to be on stage once before members of duos and trios take the stage a second time.
    2) no one has been taping for the group thus far, so that was for their personal benefit. from August on, it will be purely optional as a courtesy to those who would like to review and/or share their performances. we can also make the videos private so only you can view them, but no one will tape you without your consent.

Being the proud parent I am, check out my son Dave's latest Jam in the Van video of guitar great Anders Osborne: http://tinyurl.com/d672wnu. (note: this is a professional video, done in the Jam Van not some shaky, barf-inducing iPhone thing).
