April Open Mic

Welcome to our NYC Guitar Group April Open Mic. A great way to take the stress out of tax season. Here's a quick reminder of the way things work:

• Sign up starts around 6:30-ish. We generally start playing around 7:15.

• 5 bucks in the bucket next to the sign up sheet. Not just for the players, but also for guests, groupies, moms and dads - we need to pay for our fab sound guy and our website.

• Everyone gets 2 songs for a max of 10 minutes stage time. We really need to watch the clock so everyone gets to play as early as possible. And things keep moving.

• Please no backing tracks, loopers, iPads, whatevers. They take too long to set up and take down and eat into everyone else's playing time.

• Starting in May WE MOVE TO TUESDAYS at ELLA for a few months.

• Have a great time. You're an exceptionally fine, talented and supportive group. See you there.

Any chance of making this at least a twice per month meetup, or is that logistically too difficult? Just an idea.

Hi guys...alas, I won't be able to make it tonight. I got a late start on a busy day. Will be practicing! Hope to see you at the next one.

Hi guys... I definitely appreciate all the responses and tough love -- especially about listening, developing my ear, etc. Doubt that I will get up there and play this time. I have nothing to play yet.

If you've ever thought about performing, if you've written a song and played it only once or hundreds of times alone in your room, this is the place. YOUR audience has been there, they want you to do well and they understand all the emotions, resistances and issues around getting up there to do it. This is a real venue with a stage ,lighting, a good P.A. but especially an audience who PAID to hear you. That's what you want. The best $5 you could invest in your own musical development.

I have met so many great people through this open mic. Songwriting, learning covers and practicing your craft are solitary activities. Attending an open mic , you realize that there are others who have this kind of dedication. It is life affirming for the closeted "artist" who often feels cut off and in a world of their own. This is a paradox for the performer. An open mic is a celebration of a kind of lifestyle we have few people can relate to BUT WE GET IT.And if you're not a player or performer it's the best damn night of "handicraft music" you will ever experience. You are invited too.

    Hi,
Great to be a part of this group! I'm a crooner of classic American pop tunes (aka Tin Pan Alley). Would love to attend tomorrow. Is this an open mic for singers too? I'm actually seeking a guitarist for a show being presented by the Ziegfeld Society on Sat. May 18 at 2pm. It's a musical based on the life of a 1920's crooner. Guitarist will be part of a quintet (guitar, piano, sax, violin, drums). The Ziegfeld Society is not paying us but it's an exciting show and is being developed for a commercial run. And also I'd like to meet musicians for paying gigs around the city! Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you all the details. Thanks!

Mostly it is guitarists, though many do singer-songwriter things and self-accompany on guitar. Backing tracks are discouraged as we have had... issues with too much gear. I'm one of the more jazz oriented players, though there are a few others in that vein. (And tomorrow I'm playing '70s rock. ;) What is the nature of the show, how much material, and your timeline? I could also suggest someone who is a great player that's not a group member.

Hey Jay, thanks for your response. The show is the life and tunes of a 1920's crooner. The songs are all classic Tin Pan Alley standards from the 1920's-30's and even one 1960's pop hit. The performance will be on Sat. May 18 and rehearsals will probably start around May 1. I think there will be about 3 rehearsals. Sheet music and mp3's of all the numbers will be emailed so we can practice on our own too. Thank you for any suggestions for a guitar player who may be right for this!

I'm a relatively new player, still learning the chords and chord changes, so I'm doubtful about me doing the open mic/stage thing anytime soon.

Should I come anyway and bring my guitar?

It would be really cool to meet people and share ideas.

Yes. Definitely. Just no "apology" when you play, no matter how it is, you are always well appreciated.

Give things a spin when you feel comfortable. Even just one song is fine. Another thing is for two newer players to work on playing a song together for the next one. Even for relatively advanced players, playing together always pushes playing to the next level.

I would really like to be there...however, I have a scheduling conflictI couldn't resolve. Have fun everyone!

Hi, I'm new. I am 51 year old professional obsessed with guitar. I play, write, sing, jam, and want to collaborate too.
Are there any meetings not on Tuesday or Wednesday; my worst two days to get anywhere at 7pm. Or can I be there (wherever) much later?
I just want to play, sing, jam with other guitarists. . .
    thanks.
