Hi! This is my second hike with the group. I don't really have any special hiking gear yet. What is absolutely necessary for this hike? Is any special level of fitness required? :) A friend wanted to join me on this hike and she asked, whether it was possible to separate from the group, if the hike turned out to be too strenuous?

Hi Agnieszka! I'm sorry you weren't able to join us, but I appreciate that you took the time to evaluate whether or not the hike would be appropriate for your abilities. Hopefully you'll be able to go to other hikes and I'll see you on the trails, soon! Have a super weekend!

I'm pretty sure I couldn't have asked for better weather for this hike. It was wonderful to be out in the sunshine with my fellow die-hards who like the hills! Thanks to everyone who came out and a huge thank you to Linda for doing a fantastic job sweeping! Hope to see you again soon.

No idea how the snow we're getting right now is going to impact trail conditions (and I have no intention of going to check them out tonight). I'd think that as long as we don't get more than a few inches, it may improve them... or it could just make everything even muddier. Regardless, come prepared for anything!

Jason and I scouted tonight. There is a lot less ice than there was two weeks ago. Some of the trails have a thin layer of snow, but it's crunchy so traction is pretty good. Despite the cold weather, there is a lot of MUD. I'd say this poses the greatest challenge. I'm not sure what you can do in terms of appropriate gear, so I'd just be prepared to slide a little. On the whole, we were able to move at a pretty fast clip. We did the whole route except the initial "warm-up", which is about 0.6 miles, and the GPS app had us at 4.3 miles. So I'd say the whole route is pretty close to 5 miles. I suspect we can do it in 2.5 hours or less.

Hi! Will the hike be a loop or up and back on the same trail? Thanks!

    March 20, 2013

    • Carina G.

Hi Bruce. We'll be going out and back on the white trail with multiple loops on side trails.

Hike Slogan: NO HILL IS TOO STEEP! Jason and I scouted on Sunday (10Mar13) and it was a beautiful day to be in the woods. My planned route, which includes all the named trails plus a little extra, came out to 4.6 miles according to the GPS app, and it took us just under 2 hours. I would plan on 2.5-3 hours for the group, depending on trail conditions. The current trail conditions are ICY and MUDDY. There were some sections that were practically glacial and pretty slow going, even with studded boots. Who knows how much will melt before the hike, but I think it's pretty much guaranteed that the trails will be muddy. As noted earlier, this will be a very strenuous, hilly, and challenging hike. Wear appropriate gear and be prepared for a workout! We're planning to scout again just before the hike, weather permitting, and I'll post another update if we do.

Sorry I'll miss this hike....doing an event w/another meetup group @ same time.

As with Lucien Morin, this is a strenuous hike with many hills and steady inclines. In fact, I think Abraham Lincoln is the most challenging/difficult park in Monroe County (I love it!). Please know your hiking abilities and whether this hike is suited for you. I checked it out on February 16th and there was quite a bit of ice on the trails. This was manageable with studded boots, but would be tricky without some sort of traction control. Obviously, we won't know much about the trail conditions until much closer to the hike date. I'll post updates on future scouting hikes. I'd like to do most of the named trails in the park, conditions permitting, so we'll all get quite a workout!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
