Most enjoyable, good hiking pace and nice weather. I didn't miss not having hilly terrain!

This will be my very first meetup event. Maybe. How much will 5 miles kick my butt? Any advice?

Karen, if you have not been hiking recently this hike is likely to be hard for you. As Kristin has pointed out there are no major hills but this will still take considerable energy because of the terrain, the cold, and especially if there is any snow to walk through/on. If you are at all doubtful about this hike Sunday's shorter hike to Corbett's Glen may be a better introduction to the club.

Okay, I'll check it out. Corbett's Glen is beautiful and probably very cool in the winter.

I have scouted this hike a few times, and have seen Pileated Woodpeckers twice, a ton of deer, and cardinals and blue jays. With a large group, we might not see much, but who knows! Please remember that if we have snowy/icy conditions the difficulty of the hike will increase. There are no significant hills on this hike, but no trail is really "flat." Depending on the weather this week, it might be a good idea to pack spikes and gaiters. Yesterday the trail was lightly snow covered with a few areas that had standing water and mud. Snowshoes will be overkill unless we have several inches of new snow on Saturday morning.
