Byzantium Field Day

  • Apr 20, 2013 · 12:00 PM

We will be doing non-livedistro things like setting up a dialup server and playing with hardware/meatware methods of connecting people beyond normal wifi range.

if anyone has access to rooftops in the columbia heights/mount pleasant area let us know. we might want to do some urban range tests.

@matt fowle: we'll call it remte attendance :P
@rick: yeah we use ubiquiti gear for the community mesh in the area. i haven't made any diy antennas short of wokfi but we can certainly experiment with that on saturday.
for this sprint we are looking at tech in the same vein/spirit as byzantium and not byzantium specifically so the frequency isn't terribly important. im planning on testing a wireless store and forward courier system and possibly ax25 over uhf or vhf.

The Ubiquiti routers are good out to 15 miles if you can get line-of-site, and go for under $100

Hi, have you been playing with antennas yet? I've build several out of mixing bowls and have been getting good gain. Are you doing 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

life has hit us in the face this week and we'd like to push this off a week or more. is there anyone watching or signed up who was really really hoping to do this this weekend? there is also a conference in NC that a bunch of people in the area are going to so that might limit the pool of geeks for this weekend more than usual :P
if i don't hear back from anyone before tonight i'm going to push it out to april 19th so we can get past tax day and the like.
