Hackernest Tech Social Special Edition: AngelHack Team Matching

  • Nov 26, 2012 · 8:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Need an AngelHack team?

You've 60 seconds to pitch your idea. PROTIP:
Be memorable.

Participant demographics (as of Nov 22):
- 320 registrations and climbing (but we have lots of space now!)
- event volunteers: need a few overnighters (email JJ)

- 70% dev, 15% ux/design, 15% biz/mktg
- average age: ~25 years
- 6:1 male-to-female ratio (improving!)
- 99% of respondents requested high fives
- most common dude name: some form of "Jon"
- most common dudette name: Jessica

- best answer to "Would you like a high five?" Nadya D: (^_^)/5

********

This month, the generous folks over at Achievers (ex-I Love Rewards) are opening up their office to us. They've a fantastic story to tell and if you're lucky, they might just do so.

Here's what the evening should look like:

  1. Walk in, get name tags, answer these questions three:
    - role: "Dev" / "Des" / "Biz" / "?" (other)
    - pitching: "P"
    - need team: "T"
Bit convoluted, but logical. You see a girl with a nametag that says: "Dev P T" ...and you know she's a coder pitching an idea and (possibly) wants (to join) a team.
  2. Grab beer, get chatty.
  3. Quick intro, announcements, badass sponsor talks, Q&A.
  4. Back-to-back-no-applause egalitarian 60-sec pitches: name, project, role(s) you need filled.
FAIR WARNING: Be considerate; pay attention. Talking during pitches is ultra disrespectful and will get you ejected.
  5. Struggle to find each other amidst the chaos, and in doing so, find yourselves. <3

Awesome gold sponsors:

The fantastic team at Grossman Dorland Recruiting -
exceptionally talented at finding exceptionally talented people

The rockstar recruiters (who are actually super-down-to-earth) over at GuruLink can do wonders for your team

The very righteous Venture Deli: accelerating growth and facilitating investment in organizations that matter to the world

Gracious space sponsor:

Achievers (once upon a time, I Love Rewards) - employee rewards and recognition done right - with $38.1 million dollars in funding... ZOMG

We need ONE MORE DEVELOPER to complete our AngelHack team! Preference goes to Ruby on Rails and/or Mobile Website development.
We plan to build a website with a complimentary mobile utility (all supported by a thinking-man's backend) that helps users in need locate 'Good Mechanics'.
If you have what it takes (or can refer someone) to help us meet our goal of a functioning Minimum Viable Product by Sunday's deadline, please email me quickly and join our pit crew!!!!

Hey Guys, our startup is MaikSense. We did a 60sec pitch on Monday. We are creating an iPad app that will attempt to make sense out of your content depending on the what your doing at that moment in time. We got a lot of positive feedback and have successfully began to build our team for the AngelHack event. We are always looking to accept additional developers to join our team, preferably iOS proficient. So if your interested in learning more, feel free to contact me here (mkirlew[at]mimosolutions.ca) or you can also find me on LinkedIn.

Hey everyone. I am looking for a front end designer, and a couple developers to help me launch my idea called Rentaroo. Rentaroo is a collaborative consumption, two sided marketplace that allows ordinary people to rent out their unused belongings, and allows other people in need of things to rent them. Think of AirBNB but for everything other than accommodations. Using a minimum viable product I have proven that there is demand for this idea on both ends. People want to rent things, and people have stuff laying around that they are willing to rent out. This is a disruptive idea that allows people to make money off of the things collecting dust in their garage (ladders, lawnmowers, snow blowers, tools, lawn furniture, camping equipment, canoes, etc etc.) There are similar community sharing sites already, but nobody has done it right. Let's change that. Message me if you are interested. Cheers.

We could really use a talented ruby on rails or nodejs developer for the Vote-It team. We need someone who wants to take charge, and be a lead developer. If you're looking for a team, anonymous voting (yet secure and authenticated) is a good bet. There are people out there right now that need this service desperately, and they have no alternative but to either suffer silently or go out in streets protesting. This is your chance to work on something for the good of humanity, so please send me an email if you're still waffling, or looking for a team.

We would also like a designer, with a taste for simplicity, or anyone with a passion to help give a voice to those who are in need.

Thanks, best of luck to those who are already teamed up, and a big thanks to the organizers.

Thanks for coming out, everyone!! Hope you had fun. Don't forget you also have another chance to do a 60-second pitch at the event itself on Saturday -- so PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! <3

    November 28, 2012

  • Yanni

My pitch for a de-centralized personal health record is here on my wiki:
    http://yanni.exobean.com/pier/apps/angelhack
The team is now two developers, plus maybe one more developer. We want to build something with MongoDB, Bootstrap, and node.js or C#.

We need UI/UX. A person knowledgeable about the health care industry would be good to have, and a biz dev person too.

I didn't realize earlier that the rules say teams are limited to 5 people. I thought we could build multiple reference designs, if tons of developers wanted to join.

We're evolving our thoughts on what to do, right now (e.g. business model, technology stack, etc). So get it contact if you're interested.

If anyone has the contact info for that gentleman with the blue hoodie that presented his vencap group -- recall the one looking for B2B projects to fund -- could you please forward to me, as I (and others I know) have some good ideas to present. Thanks.

Hey Everyone, it was awesome to meet all of you yesterday. I am proficient in front end dev/design and have experience in back end RoR and PHP, also limited experience in mobile - Java, QML and Qt. My main specialty and experience is in business consulting and validation. I consult various tech startups and RIM for Blackberry's turnaround strategy. I go to A LOT of these events and see many people have good ideas and some bad ideas, and some people have no idea how to make money off of it. If you are relying on ads and traffic be very careful. I am currently not with a team so I will helping any team who wants in creating a smart business model and help them with validation. I spoke to some teams already and gave them some advice on how to think differently and showed some their product already exists. I don't want you guys to waste time, resources and passion and would love to help consult any team on their idea. Email me at [masked] and give me a descrip. of...

    November 27, 2012

    • Ashley M.

your idea and your business model and Ill do some research in my free time and email you back some advice. Also I couldn't hear all the ideas since it was loud, im still looking for a team so read my cred above and message me what you need. Thanks, and remember iOS just approved its 1 millionth app the other day, if you think ad money will be your main revenue model please think twice. Getting traffic is very slim these days. Thanks happy coding.

Hey everyone! I was unable to make it to the Meetup last night due to my massive Plate-clearing exercise in preparation for AngelHack.

I represent a team of 3 (1 designer and 2 developers(so far)), and we are looking for YOU!!!!! Are you a bring-it-on, full-steam-ahead, superstar coder? We want you on board! Front and back end....we want you! Another designer?? We want you too!!!! We've got a project geared to take this thing but want to make sure we have the critical mass to pull it off!!!

There are two sides to this project: Web and Mobile. It would be great to have a deploy-able MVP on a few platforms, so if you are an Ace iOS, Android, WP8, BB10 developer who needs a vehicle for their awesomeness....your chariot awaits! If HTML5 is you type, have we got a hot date for you!!!! Join Us and let's take this thing!!!

PM me with your skill set and role you would like to take!

It's at 1189 King Street West (south side of King just East of Mowat Ave). Lot's of room and one of the few places I know is open on Monday night in the immediate area.

I'm looking to assemble a brilliant, world-concious team to create an anonymous voting service: "Vote-it" would allow for individuals to vote via social media, corporations to pose inquiries to employees and retail businesses to gain feedback from their customers.

Small and big businesses alike, would be able to conduct surveys with customers and clients or take internal polls to aide decision making.

More importantly, Vote-it would provide a reliable method for people in distressed situations to unite, as protesting has failed the people. Vote-it would provide a voice for those willing to face tear gas and snipers and make sure that their voices are not lost in the madness of protest, civil war or corrupt government.

Details are on paper as per the rules, email me if you are interested. I am a capable developer, looking for much more capable and passionate team members.

If you're anything like me you probably meet lots of really great people at these events and the next day look at all the new contacts in your phone and can’t remember who's who...

So, to help me as much as anyone else, I've built a free new Android app called 'MetAt' that’s now available in the Google Play store. Once linked to your Meetup account, 'MetAt' will download and sync all the groups you attend and their member lists. Not only can you store contact information, but you can include and update personalized notes about each entry for future reference.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.metat.contacts

I'll be there on the 26th so please download it and then come tell me what you do and don't like about it!

    November 14, 2012

    • Eric R.

Downloaded the app… if Meetup API allows, you should pull in lists of attendees for events, and automatically populate their social media links. And when I open the app, maybe it could recommend people I should add. It's hard to get started in a new app from a blank slate.

      1 · November 17, 2012

    • Gareth M.

Thanks a lot for downloading the app! What you said about being difficult to use from a blank slate seems a common thing. I'm starting on the new version and I think it's something I need to address. That's all really great feedback though! Thanks you very much!
