Debugging 101

Debugging 101

In this presentation. We will cover some of the basic terminologies and methodologies behind debugging applications. Some of the topics included will be utilizing breakpoints, Analyzing the stack and understanding the data dump and how it all works together. Additional topics include using debuggers to analyze algorithms and identify software behavior.

We will cover the basic usage of two free debuggers, OllyDBG and GDB. OllyDBG is the most popular free Windows debugger and can be downloaded at http://www.ollydbg.de. The latest release is currently 2.01. GDB is included in most major Linux Distributions.

This presentation will not teach reverse engineering skills, it is designed to give the attendee a basic idea of what a debugger is and how to use some of its many features to extract information about a piece of software.
