Dave Winer, well-known in the developer world for evangelizing open standards in Internet technology, will talk the future of the web as a development platform and opportunities for developers to work together to keep it growing as an open medium. He will also talk about Little Outliner, the new browser-based notepad and organizer from his latest company, Small Picture.

Winer hopes this will be an interactive talk, with lots of comments and questions from people in the room.

Bio: Dave Winer is the founder of Userland Software, Living Videotext and most recently Small Picture. He was instrumental in the creation of RSS, XML-RPC, OPML and SOAP. He has blogged at Scripting News since 1997 (http://scripting.com), was a contributing editor to HotWired,  a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Technology in[masked] and co-hosted the "Rebooting the News" podcast with Jay Rosen.

Thanks again to Matt (and the other Boston Globe people) for organizing the talk. Like others, I also came to learn more about HTML5 as a platform and tool to be leveraged, however, despite not getting to that topic specifically, I immensely enjoyed Dave Winer's 'eleventh hour' soapbox. Of the two types of target people for this group, I fall in the 'hackers' group. As such, I didn't walk away with a greater technical understanding of RSS, Google, 'pay walls', etc... I did walk away with a sense of Dave's experiences and conglomerated opinions of decades in the field. Was this a lecture aimed to appeal to our logos? Hell no! But, I certainly left chuckling about the energy, and the subsequent feedback, of the group.

With Google Reader going away as discussed, what are some good alternatives? iGoogle , too.

Feedly is pretty great, plus you can easily import your old reader feed into it.

I've been looking more into this as well. I've started using www.feedly.com, which is already links into my google reader and takes out all your reader feeds. It's REALLY streamlined. Whomever designed it knew what they were doing IMHO. Check it out.

With all the buzz going around in the web about Reader going away several people have stepped forward to offer similar if not improved services. Seriously though, I've already integrated feedly into my iphone and nexus7 (and work PC/laptop). Check it out.

Should have been titled "An evening with Dave Winer". I had a vague hope to learn something about using HTML 5 as a platform. Thanks for organizing it, though.

Dave gave us a fun and lively discussion on RSS, but never got to the main topic of Using HTML5 as a Platform.

Hi Dave, is Little Outliner like ThinkTank I got for my 128K Mac in 1983? Great little program. Has it really been 30 years?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
