March Hadoop Meetup: Using the Hive mind

Our March meetup is on the theme of Hive, and how you can use it to manage and query all your data in Hadoop. We've got two speakers followed by a smaller workshop on Hive. Then beer and pizza as usual which this month is sponsored by 10gen.

 - MongoDB and Hadoop - Chris Harris

 - Hive at Last.fm - Omar Ali

 - Hive workshop on AWS - Dan Harvey

The workshop is something we've not tried before so we'll see how it goes. I've got lots of $50 AWS vouchers I can give away to members that turn so so we can spend the rest of the time at SkillsMatter working through tutorials or what ever people want with Hive. We'll have a few people around with experience in Hive so it's a great time to get started and ask them questions!

Also as this meetup is at SkillsMatter please also signup on their site here if you wish to attend: http://skillsmatter.com/event/nosql/hive-mind/js-3750

Thanks,

Dan

Good speakers, described exactly what hive is and is not and some examples. And getting started on aws is a massive bonus too.

Great way to get up and running with Hive on AWS, I managed to populate some database and do some query, I'm very pleased with the results !

We do need to warn people that if you're going to show code in a large room you need to make it visible!

Learned a bit about MongoDB and saw how Last.fm uses Hive. Liked seeing the Hive SQL they use as well as their visualizations.

Really enjoyed this meetup. Dan came up with a nice set up including speakers' use cases, Hive workshop, break up groups, and networking. The ability to embed computational statistics in Hive-SQL queries was a great take away for me.

Ah yes, should have emailed out about that. Yes, please bring laptops if you want to be involved in the workshop. All you need is a web browser and SSH client, so most people should be fine! Will email around details tomorrow morning...

Assuming we should bring laptops for the workshop part. Any guidance on what we need to have installed if anything?
