RE: [hug-uk] Hadoop based Consultancies

Hi Alex,

Good point.

Indeed it seems there is a lot of garage-work around Hadoop.
It's worth saying that the big names are busy working on their appliances
and software products to "work with Hadoop", however your question is open
to some consideration...

What would be a Hadoop based consultancy? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask
for Big Data consultancy?

The way I see it, Hadoop is part of the infrastructure enabling Big Data
which, in turn, enables Big Analytics, Social Analytics and even boosts good
old Business Intelligence.

Although we would like to think so, the world has not changed since Hadoop -
yeah, sure Yahoo!, Google, FB did changed the world - but at the end of the
day Business is still business and there must be value to be harnessed from
all this hype.

My point is that a "Hadoop" consultancy must have a holistic approach
towards big data otherwise it would just be a Hadoop enabler.

What would one use Hadoop for?
I would use it with MapReduce to process complex statistical models (i.e.
Game Theory, Stochastic Analysis, Network Analysis, Graph Analysis
algorithms) and use a vector/matrix organized database for storing the

Then you need the mother of all graphical interfaces to plot all the
possible inferences. 8-)

In addition to the big names you mentioned, IBM is moving fast with its
Cognos and BigInsights offerings, EMC with GreenPlum and Teradata just
released a complete appliance. All of them offer some consultancy services
for implementing their products.

All the best,

Marcelo Hernandez

So, who are the big name consultancies who know about Hadoop?

Off the top of my head they are Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR, ......
and...... is that it? Oracle? IBM?

All the individual experts I know are busy with their own start ups and too
busy to do much consultancy.

Am I wrong?
