August 2012 San Francisco Hadoop User Meetup

  • Aug 8, 2012 · 6:00 PM

The August Hadoop meetup will be held Wednesday, August 8, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This meetup will be hosted by Splunk at 250 Brannan St., San Francisco, CA.

As usual, we will use the discussion-based "unconference" format. At the beginning of the meetup we will collaboratively construct an agenda consisting of several discussion breakout groups. All participants may propose a topic and volunteer to facilitate a discussion. All Hadoop-related topics are encouraged, and all members of the Hadoop community are welcome.

Event schedule:

  • 6:00pm - Welcome
  • 6:30pm - Introductions; start creating agenda
  • Breakout sessions begin as soon as we're ready
  • 8:00pm - Conclusion

Food and refreshments will be provided courtesy of Splunk.

I had a great time and learned lots in the newbie room :D It's good to hear what people wish they had known as it gives us things to look out for our first times around, making it easier to get up to speed with Hadoop. The more seasoned crowd was really nice and helpful, which definitely makes learning Hadoop more enjoyable.

First session is always better than second. I went to review of different noSQL databases for the first session. I saw a very interesting spreadsheet to Hadoop job with visualization capabilities that would be very useful for business people.

Didn't know what to expect as a sales/bizdev guy. Before this, I pronounced Hadoop as Hey-Doo-Wop. Then Stefan Groschupf stepped up to the whiteboard in the Hadoop for Noobs breakout and proceeded to dazzle the group with his knowledge and ability to communicate the basic concepts. Simply brilliant.

I would sure like to chat with someone tomorrow who has successfully run multiple linear regression over Hadoop!
