Hallyuwood Film Club: Traveler from the North (2012) & North Korean Defector Q&A

Welcome everyone!

The Hallyuwood Film Club, along with NKHR (North Korean Human Rights Refugee Rescue Fundraiser Campaign - 탈북난민 구호금 모금운동) are hosting a movie screening of the movie Traveler from the North (여행자). The movie depicts the tragic story of a North Korean woman defector who through sex trafficking, a serious and unfortunately common risk that is part of the defection process for most women, becomes pregnant and carries her pregnancy to birth. The movie follows this woman's life and the hardships of her and her child's resettlement in Seoul.

Afterwards, we will be screening a documentary North Korea Through the Eyes of Witnesses that include testimonies and narration explaining the realities of the North Korean political prison camps and the lifestyles of the impoverished citizens.

After the screening, there will be a Q&A session with a North Korean defector (in Korean with an English translator), who has gone through similar defection process and difficulties of resettlement, to speak with regards to the stories depicted in the films.

This is a fundraiser. The goal of this fundraising effort is to raise US$12,000 to rescue six North Korean defectors from third party countries and transport them to safety in South Korea, where their human rights will be upheld and protected. Many defectors are in hiding and living in fear of repatriation to North Korea, where they will likely be sent to a prison camp and tortured.  In order to prevent their forced repatriation, the NKHR campaign team hopes to spread both local and international awareness about human rights violations in North Korea as well as raise the requisite funds. All donations will go to the NKHR rescue fund.

To learn more about the fundraiser campaign and help spread awareness about North Korean human rights violations, visit the NKHR website.
