The Heritage Society Candlelight Tour

The Heritage Society, a museum complex at Sam Houston Park, collects, preserves, exhibits, and celebrates the diverse history of the Houston area.  Nestled in ten acres of beautiful green parkland in Downtown, The Heritage Society operates ten historic structures that date from 1823 to 1905.  The Heritage Society exists to educate visitors about Houston's interesting history and also to celebrate the diversity of the people who came together to build this world-class city.

Sam Houston Park is lit with thousands of twinkling lights, and the ten historic structures are all beautifully decorated with old fashioned lights and adornments, each housing costumed characters that come to life and tell the stories of Houston's past.  The event will also feature a variety of holiday musical performances from area choirs, two exhibits in the Museum Gallery, family-friendly activities at Santa's Workshop and delicious food from the Candlelight Cafe - something for the whole family to enjoy.

Let's gather near the large red sculpture outside the Houston Public Library on the Bagby side of the building in between McKinney and Lamar (look for the green tiara).

If you are planning to attend the Candlelight Tour, but do not intend to join the group, please do not rsvp yes to this event.  It falsely enlarges the number of attendees.

Tickets at the gate are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (ages 65+), $8 for students (ages 6-18), and children age 5 and younger are free.  Advance tickets can be ordered online at a discounted rate.

When entering, you will receive a program for a self-guided tour.

This is a mostly outdoor event so please dress accordingly.

Outdoor photography is permitted.

The entry lines for the structures do get long so patience will be required.

On Allen Parkway, there will be STREET CLOSURES.

Downtown offers free metered street parking on Sundays (do not park by the red ones).  Garage parking is available in the Heritage Clay Street Garage for $10 cash only.

For MetroRail riders, there will be a service interruption.  RAIL SHUTTLE buses will be operating.  The Main Street Square Station is the closest station.

I'll be there Friday to take pictures for an unrelated events but this is a great thing. This is the first year they're expanding it to Sundays so I'll try to stop by if I can.

This is a nice event. I went last year with another group. It is especially interesting if you are a native Houstonian like myself and enjoy the local history and historical buildings.
