A80 - Marin Highlands, Mt Tam and Paradise

  • to
  • Sports Basement

610 Old Mason Street , San Francisco, Ca (map)

    37.804054 -122.455482

  • Will try to arange car-pooling for drive to SF
  • Terrain: Surface Streets  and Bike Trails
    Distance: 80 Miles
    Elevation: ~8,000 ft
Speed: 12-13mph average; more on the flats, less on hills.
Rider Level: Strong Intermediate  / Advanced

    Sweep: No
    Re-Group Points: Yes
Rest Stops: Mt Tam Summit, Fair Fax, Tiburon

9:15 am SF Meetup / 9:30 am "Soft" Rollout (Car Pool meet up around 7:00 am location TBD)

This route is part of my training for Devil Mtn Double, so yes the full route has a lot of climbing.  There will be some short re-groups at key turns and longer re-groups as mentioned above.  You can get food at rest stops, but it will be awhile to we get there so bring some snacks with you.

    Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3919109

Please print your own route sheet, you will need one! This is not a swept ride, it is vital you carry a route sheet as this is out of our normal riding areas so you probably won't know the roads. I will NOT be printing and passing out sheets for each rider.  Even if you plan to put the route in your Garmin, you should still have a printed route on you as a back-up.

Standard Disclaimer: helmets required, bring food & water, cash, and repair stuff to be self-sufficient. You should be comfortable riding roads with auto traffic and some with little to no shoulder.

Route Variations: If you want to join but not do the whole route there are some simple variations you might consider.  Marin Highlands loop is easy to bypass (~10 miles 1k climb) as well as the out-in-back part of Mt Tam Summit (~6 miles 1.5k) and most of the Paradise loop out to Tiburon (~10 miles, 400ft).  There is also a ferry from Tiburon back to SF if you feeling wiped out at that point.

My April is already quite packed. I have a rest-stop to captain for Pardee Party next weekend, out of town for the two weekends after that. Then, b/c I am a glutton for punishment, I going to do Devil Mtn Double after almost 3 weeks off the bike. Should I survive that, the first weekend in May is open for me, so I might reschedule for then (Yes, Shon, I know that it is the same weekend at Grizzly)

    • Scott M.

Well 17th is Davis Double, which I was planning on doing. I suppose that still leaves the 18th open. But if I do this ride right after a double, you might be able to drop me on the hills

Ha ..yea I'm just harassing you

In the last 10 years it has rained 3 times on March 29th, (at least according to my weather app). I guess Saturday will make it 4 times. Sorry all, this sucks but I am canceling the ride.

    March 27, 2014

    • Javier A.

Ah ..that's a bummer, do you know which May date you were thinking about? I'd love to do this route, my april is already scheduled out, all I have in May is weekend of 17th/18th (hint , hint ..post for this weekend :-) )..or I guess technically Sunday the 26th would work as the 25th is the HW century ...and that ain't no thang for anyone that can handle this ride ...or everh Monday the 27th as I think most have that day off.

      March 28, 2014

    • Scott M.

well, I will be in the bay area already 25-27, so 27th might work. Taking my bike to the convention will require me to work out some interesting logistics though. Probably will be a bit sleep-deprived as well.

There's no mention of rain cancellation. Will the ride still happen if it's raining? I'm out if so - I've had my days of riding in the rain. It's not looking good for Saturday at this point. As much as we need the rain, I hope we ride too. I love this ride!!!

    March 26, 2014

    • Scott M.

Nope, I made other plans for Sunday already. Besides it will be quite cloudy, so you lose much of the view, which is kind of the reward for all the climbing effort

      March 27, 2014

    • Javier A.

I wouldn't be able to make it Sunday either, plans with Kallie and she's teaching Saturday to can't "flip / flop" the days ...I can however to an early short ride Sunday as long as Im' back by 10:00am so will be posting a 45 mile ride starting at 7am on Sunday later on today.

Something is wrong with your RWGPS or are you proposing to return to the Basement and then cross back over and finish in Marin?

    March 24, 2014

    • Javier A.

That is for the 5 extra mile bonus ;-) ...yea looks like route should end at mile 80, but maybe accidentally clicked over at the extra 4.3 mile mark ...I'll do my route sheets up w/o the extra miles

      March 24, 2014

    • Scott M.

issue is fixed, route end at mile 80 now as intended

      March 24, 2014

  • Javier A.

Hey Scott, not sure how recently you've been there but the last 3 times I've done this we can't park at sports basement anymore, they have "sports basement parking enforcement Nazi's" making sure you are there to shop ...there is a parking a little ways down mason street on the same side as SB that we've been parking at, then riding to meetup in front of SB.

    March 24, 2014

    • Scott M.

I parked there in January for ride w/o any issue, though it was just my car and I did shop a bit. Might be issue if they see large group leaving though

      March 24, 2014

    • Scott M.

Anyway I know area you are talking about, fine to park there as well

I guess it is time to start carpool discussion for Saturday. Not sure who is coming from where. I am off of 50, so generally Fish Hatchery or Sunrise works well for me. West Sac P&R pretty much works for everyone as it is right after 50 and 80 join up

    March 24, 2014

  • Mark Van B.

Anyone meeting up in Rocklin or Roseville and want to caravan?

    March 23, 2014

  • Javier A.
