Cold Creek Valley loop adventure

The above address will only get you to the approximate area - you will need to continue on Stunt Road per the directions below.

The hike is planned for Cold Creek Valley in Calabasas. This is a moderate "loop" hike of about 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 850' but it will probably feel like 7 as the last 3/4 of a mile or so is where the "adventure" comes in - there is no trail!

Due to minimal parking at the trailhead, we will meet in a parking about 1.2 miles from the intersection of Mulholland Hwy. Parking is the second large off road parking area after the 1 mile marker (the first one will probably have quite a few vehicles in it).

What to bring: Comfortable shoes, at least 1 liter of water and/or sports drink, sun screen? and a snack for the short break we will take after our initial ascent.

Directions: From San Fernando Valley are take 101 Fwy West exit Mulholland Dr., turn left and head South. Bear to the right on Valmar which turns into Old Topanga Road. Turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. Travel several miles West to Stunt Road. Turn left. There is a fairly large parking area on the right in about 1 mile. Just beyond that is a port-a-potty, a small bridge and another parking area as you enter the curve. This is where we will meet at 9:00AM. If you see the fence and gate on your left, you have gone too far. If you put 2002 Stunt Rd, Calabasas, Ca. on Google Maps (about 1/3 of a mile from Mulholland Hwy.), it will show the general area and you can see the horseshoe curve and Cold Creek where the gate is located. I have limited space for car pooling from Altadena at 7:50AM or from the Universal City Red Line Station at 8:20AM. Anyone wanting more information regarding this hike can contact me at [masked]

From the "staging area" we will car pool to 1299 Cold Canyon Rd., Calabasas, CA near mile marker 1.43 and park safely off the road where permitted. There is a chain and sign across the trailhead. We will begin the hike here at 9:30AM.

I bet against the weather and the weather won. This would have been an excellent adventure if the rain had not muddied the trails to the point they would have been unsafe to travel. We were able to complete the uphill leg of the hike on the planned trail, but then the remainder of the hike had to be completed on the roadside. We had a small group of real troopers – no one complained about the rain or the mud or even having to walk on the side of the road. Everyone was just glad to be outdoors.

I don't think the rain will be much of a threat, so the hike is on (I have a couple extra rain ponchos).

We have 10 more hikers from Early Bird Hiking. Unless the forecast for rain increases to 40 or 50% for Saturday, we will hike - just be prepared with a windbreaker or rain poncho for comfort.
