For this month's session at Poke we welcome Sanderson Jones...
Sanderson Jones is the co-founder of The Sunday Assembly a godless congregation that celebrates life. He started it in January 2013 with his friend, and fellow comedian, Pippa Evans as local community project in Islington. Then it went viral.
You'll be able to learn loads from his journey and how you can apply many of the principles to your own startup. The hardest part for any new venture is finding and retaining a captive audience and Sanderson has first-hand experience of how a new idea can take a life of it's own.
There are now 28 Sunday Assemblies across the world, with thousands more folk asking to start them in 2014. In London hundreds meet to sing great songs, listen to interesting talks and give it up for being alive. It's meteoric rise caused The Daily Beast to call it "the world's fastest growing church".
Sanderson will go through the design, the accidents, and the sheer good fortune, that led to this outcome.
Before becoming whatever job you would call it, Sanderson was a stand up comedian, who sold all the tickets to his shows by hand, then researched the audience that were coming, and incorporated their social media into the performance. In September 2012 he became the first person to sell out the Sydney Opera House by hand, and also sold out the Union Chapel.
Until February 13th 2014 he was the world record holder for the world's longest hug. He plans on winning that title back within the year.
This promises to be one of our best events yet. As usual the ticket price includes pizza, refreshments & friendly folk. And hopefully you'll learn a thing or two – about life, building a tribe and marathon hugs.
It's the day of the budget (boo), but the day before the 2nd UN International Day of Happiness (yay) which we're supporting. The theme will be Reclaim Happiness, so keep your eyes peeled nearer the time on how you can get involved.
Hope to see you there!
