School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Science, Magic, and Medicine

Let's Talk Science is holding our second ever Harry Potter-themed science event. We will be showing kids a variety of magic-themed science demonstrations and letting them participate in hands-on activities in a variety of "classes" that we have prepared (Potions, Transfiguration, etc.). We are looking for volunteers to help us run the activities (simple, do not require much science background) as well as dress up and provide a nice environment for the event.

    Hello volunteers,

Thank you for coming out today! We are happy to report that the event for the most part went smoothly, and that most of the kids and parents involved appeared to leave quite satisfied.

This was all thanks to great volunteers like you five! Unfortunately, James and I were running around too much to say goodbye, but we hope that you enjoyed the day! And that if we run it again, you are possibly interested in returning!

    Hi Jeannie,

All information can be found at Please feel free to ask me any questions via email here!

Also, if it is too late to register (I will be printing final lists very soon), we do have lots of drop-in space so don't be discouraged from coming out!

I think my kids would like to attend this. Where do I find information on signing up, fees, etc.?

    Hey everyone,

To sign up as a volunteer, just pass me/us an email at [masked]. I can't guarantee that we can put you down in a class at this point, but I will try! We also have more general "wandering guide" positions too.

If possible, especially if you are doing a class, I would prefer you to meet us shortly before the event so we can talk about general training points (emergencies, contingencies etc.) as well as talk about your class activity - however, I know most of you are far away from the U of A campus so it's not the most convenient for you. We will also do some training on the morning of as well.

Our training sessions are on Monday October 21st and Thursday October 24th at 5PM, and although the training will only take half an hour or so, we will be in the room until 7 so please feel free to drop by (preferably with RSVP)!

    Costumes are welcome!

    Thanks again!

I'd love to volunteer for this! What do I have to do to sign up?

Is it too late to join/sign up to help teach a class? :D

I really want to help out, but I think I will be busy that morning until after 1pm! Can I still help out???

Absolutely! We run from 10 to 4 with 2 hour clean up and setup spaces before and after the event, so if you want to go from 1 to 6 (it will hopefully be 5), I can put you down for that.

Oh I think I will actually be busy for that whole day so I don't think I can help out anymore. So disappointed :( Sorry for that

Hey everyone! Thank you for your interest in this event. To help us organize everyone in addition to our other volunteer lists, we would like to know what Hogwarts class you would like to teach. We have almost everything (at least all the major classes), so don't be shy! Or, if you would like to do something general, that is also welcome.
