HHC hike 5/16/09 with BART shuttle

      All hikers,

Here is a little extra info for anyone who prefers to meet the

group at the Rockridge BART station, either by BART or by car instead of

the Castro Valley Park & Ride lot where we will carpool to the Rockridge

BART station, leaving at 8:30 am.

If you want to arrive at Rockridge on BART, plan to connect

with the Pittsburg/Baypoint train that arrives at Rockridge at 8:57 am.,

departing Oakland 12th St. at 8:49 am. Meet us down below the station

near one of the stairs. (20 min. between trains.)

If you come by car (or other means), meet the hiking group in the

Rockridge BART parking area near a stairway that leads up to the station

by 8:55 am. Free parking on Sat.

Please let me know if you plan to meet us at Rockridge BART.

The only public restroom and water facilities that I found along

the way are in Tilden Park at the Steam Train area where we will stop for

lunch. However, we may be able to make a pit stop at a pub or gas

station along the Oakland streets on the way to the trail head. We will

be walking a little over a mile on College Ave. and an interesting part

of Claremont Ave. between Rockridge and the trail head.

The trail begins its assent through woods, then emerges into a

long open area with great views. Near the ridge the trail returns to

wooded areas that extend into Tilden Park and finally down the DeLaveaga

trail through EBMUD watershed to Orinda. Near the Orinda BART station is

a tempting ice cream parlor, Peets coffee shop, and a cafeteria that

serves beer by the pitcher (for sharing, of course). Any refreshment

stop is optional and needs to be coordinated with carpools. I have a

Group Leader permit to lead the group on the EBMUD trails. BART fare

from Orinda to Rockridge is $1.50.
