The imminent opening of Finnish paper factory Ence and Botnia on the Uruguayan side of the river separating Uruguay and Argentina, has paradoxically both strained and strengthened relations between the two countries. In 2005, the "Great March" of Argentineans and Uruguayans on the bridge over the Uruguay River marked the beginning of a relentless campaign centered on the environmental accountability of Ence and Botnia. This film eloquently reveals the opinions and testimony of economists, environmentalists, chemists, labor unionists, engineers, and other scholars and politicians from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Spain on this controversial issue. And in an amusing moment, during a summit of world leaders a scantily clad beauty queen appears, displaying a banner that states "No to the paper factories". This documentary is distributed free of charge in Argentina and Uruguay to universities, unions, libraries and schools interested in education about and awareness of the controversy.
This story surfaced again last week at the Ibero-American summit in Santiago, Chile. Through these links to the BBC website you can read about the conference or the protest.
Entry is FREE. Simply turn up 15mins before start time.
