Chestnut Knob Trail, South Mtn State Park - Strenuous

A handful of us made a spontaneous trip to Chestnut Knob trail before the holidays. Really nice trail so I'd like to do it again.

Please note it is a strenuous trail due to the steepness so be sure to bring water and energy snacks. But of course if I made it to the top it can't be that hard, right?

It's a 4 mile out & back with a 900' elevation gain. Takes about 2 1/2 hours.

South Mountain State Park is a local favorite so hope several of you can come out and join us. When you arrive at the park there is a nice Welcome Center on the right. If you arrive a little early check out the displays and grab a map. THEN CONTINUE TO THE END OF THE ROAD TO THE TRAIL HEAD.

Trail head: The trailhead is located in the Jacob Fork Parking Area at South Mountains State Park. From Morganton, NC, take exit 105 on I-40 and follow the brown and white signs to the park. The park is approximately 20 miles south of I-40. Once you enter the park, drive to the end of the road to the Ranger Station and Jacob Fork Parking Area. (Lat:[masked] Lon:[masked])

We had a blast. Great hike, great views, great conversations. Now we're beat and starting to feel our old muscles ache. Looking forward to the next time. Chris and Jeanne.

The trial was in good condition today, but even better was the group we had for this hike. Sorry for the slightly late start but the photo op at Henry Mill Village took a little longer than I expected (because of me). It was really nice of the faster hikers to wait for the rest of us to catch up and rest before going out to the overlook!! Thanks for coming out, hope everyone enjoyed it as much as me!

I will be at the mall to carpool. I am a little nervous about the difficulty of the trail. So if I die, just leave me there. Lol

Not to worry. Whenever I pass out on a mountain hike they just wedge me between some trees so I don't roll away, then pick me up on their way back down. They're pretty good about that.

For those who want to carpool from Hickory we will meet at the Sears lower level parking at Valley Hills Mall at 10:45 and leave at 11:00 that should put us there a few minutes before 12:00. Look forward to seeing everyone!

Jeanne and I are coming from Morganton, so we'll take a direct route via Hwy 18 to get there. If anyone from this side of the HOG region is interested in riding along, send us a message and we can coordinate a meeting place. I have room for another 2 - 4.

Some of you new to the area may not be familiar with Henry Mill Village where the Hunger Games was filmed. So leaving from the mall we'll take the route that runs us through the village. If we leave the mall no later than 11:00 there will be time for some quick photos.

I'll be there with my daughter. For some reason this site wouldn't let me add her (+1) to the RSVP

Not sure why it wouldn't let you add a +1 but don't worry about it. Look forward to seeing both of you there. Glad you'll be joining us!

Gonna pass on this one as I prefer earlier hikes before the crowds arrive (also not sure I can handle this level with you folks before I get more consistent). Might do Jacobs Firm in the AM. Can't wait to see pics though.

One advantage to Chestnut Knob is it's never as crowded as the other trials. But yeah, there's a reason for that, lol.

Still trying to get over the after flu bronchitis so not a good idea to go out into the fresh, healthy air yet

Good point Mark. If we meet at our usually spot, Sears lower level parking at Valley Hills Mall at 10:45 and left at 11:00 that should put us there a few minutes before 12:00.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
