Philosophy in the Pub - Kathryn Taylor

Kathryn Taylor runs Philosophy in the Pub in Chesham ( and has agreed to bring it on the road and host a special Wycombe skeptics version for us!

This is her description of her Chesham group, to give you an idea what will happen...

What is it? A group of like-minded people meeting to talk about life, the universe and everything. What happens? Together, we’ll come up with a topic to discuss based on a stimulus e.g. a picture, news story or object and then we’ll discuss it. You don’t have to be well read, and you are welcome to sit back and enjoy the debate if you don’t want to join in. It’s all about enquiry and the 4 Cs: Caring - being sensitive and charitable towards others’ ideas; Collaboration - Working together to get closer to some sort of ‘truth’; Creative- new ideas and ways of looking at things welcome; Critical- challenging what we think and being open to new ideas.

The event is totally free, and we will just ask for a small donation if you wish to help cover Kathyn's travel expenses.

Skeptics in the Pub is a place for inquisitive people of all ages to meet and converse in the High Wycombe area.

Skeptics are people who yearn to discover the truth behind extraordinary claims that people or groups may make, this can be in areas of alternative therapies, the paranormal, religion and faith, the afterlife or many other areas of life.

We make no claims to balance, and actively promote science, freedom of expression and secular humanism. This means we often end up talking about superstition, religious fundamentalism, censorship and conspiracy theory.

You are welcome to come along and just sit and listen to others, or if you are braver get stuck right in!

see our Facebook page and Twitter account to get a fuller idea of what we are about!

Most of us have a fondness for good quality beer, so our current home is Wycombe’s only specialty ale house & bottle bar, It is also a Bring Your Own Food Pub, and they have free WiFi.

A fine session in my view. I liked the methodology. It's a bit like the talking stick they deploy in scouting organisiations for group discussion. I think it should be mandatory for all media hosts, especially BBC interviewers. Maybe there'd be more light and less heat. Its interesting that the first thing you realise in addressing any philosophical question is that its likely to be the wrong question. Thanks to Kathryn and the group for a good evening.
