Stevyn Colgan - The Skeptical Bobby

After leaving school Stevyn gained places at both art and catering colleges, but turned them down and instead accepted a drunken £50 bet with his homicide detective father that he could survive six months as a police officer. He consequently joined the Metropolitan Police Service in London and ended up staying for 30 years.

During his service he found himself frequently challenging the traditional or ‘accepted’ ways of doing things; critical thinking and his own natural skepticism made him to explore different way of doing things, often in innovative and unusual ways. These included using wizards to tackle street gambling, lollipops to stop anti‐social behavior and dog shows to prevent homicides. Ultimately, he was asked by Scotland Yard and the Home Office to be part of an experimental unit to explore some of these new ideas, many of which have now found their way into everyday policing across the UK.

The Skeptical Bobby is all about grass‐roots skepticism and why we should be critical thinkers in every aspect of our lives.

Stevyn Colgan is author of recently published Constable's Colgan’s Connectoscope®, works with the BBC for QI, and The Museum of Curiosity, and is a familiar face at Wycombe Skeptics in the pub!

Skeptics in the Pub is a place for inquisitive people of all ages to meet and converse in the High Wycombe area.

Skeptics are people who yearn to discover the truth behind extraordinary claims that people or groups may make, this can be in areas of alternative therapies, the paranormal, religion and faith, the afterlife or many other areas of life.

We make no claims to balance, and actively promote science, freedom of expression and secular humanism. This means we often end up talking about superstition, religious fundamentalism, censorship and conspiracy theory.

You are welcome to come along and just sit and listen to others, or if you are braver get stuck right in!

see our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/groups/187803204563655/ and Twitter account https://twitter.com/WycombeSITP to get a fuller idea of what we are about!

Most of us have a fondness for good quality beer, so our current home is Wycombe’s only specialty ale house & bottle bar, It is also a Bring Your Own Food Pub, and they have free WiFi.

Another great talk. Well prepared (well I guess number 52 should be), and entertainingly and professionally presented.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
