Clifton Gorge/John Bryan Park

I'm putting a limit on this of 40 for now. If someone would step up to help me (doesn't have to be another assitant organizer, but should be someone who is somewhat familiar with this trail)  we could split the group into 2 parts.

This hike starts promptly at 11AM. It takes about 1.25 hours to get there from Tri County Mall area, 10 minutes of that is from the front of John Bryan back to the Orton picnic grounds parking lot, so please plan accordingly. This hike is a favorite local area to hike. I'll make several stops along the way, and I'll try to keep a moderate pace. Distance is around 4.5 miles with very uneven, sometimes rocky terrain. Diffculty level is moderate to slightly difficult if your a beginning hiker. Lunch afterwards, probably at Youngs Dairy. Young people are welcome to join us. Dogs are not permitted in Clifton Gorge, so I suggest leaving Fido at home this time. We go right by a Ranger Station, and yes they do give fines. There is a bathroom on the way back the road in John Bryan, and there may be a portable john back at the parking lot, but I recommend stopping at one of the service stations just off of the 675 exit ramp. The BP station in Yellow Springs does not have public bathroom facilities.

Due to an occurance on one of my hikes earlier this year if you think there is ANY possibility of your getting lost or separated from the group after the hike starts here are some numbers for you to jot down and take with you although this area is regularly hiked by the locals and its unlikely that you will be alone for long. Yellow Springs Police Non-emergency[masked]John Bryan State Park[masked]. I'm not a fast hiker and I will make stops on this hike for Kodak moments, but PLEASE, PLEASE, pay attention to where the group is and when they leave an area. I will have copies of the trail map with me. If you want one please ask. This is primarily 2 loops so no one is really going to get lost. If you get separated keep walking and you will run into someone who can direct you out.

If you want to carpool I suggest meeting at the Tri County Mall in the area of the parking lot which is closest to the intersection of Kemper, and Princeton Pike (747). You will need to meet by 9AM and leave this location NOT LATER than 915AM. I have something else to do so I will not be here to meet you and lead the convoy. I'll see you when you get to the Orton Picnic parking lot.

By joining this hike you autmatically agree to the "Legal Waiver" under the pages tab at the top of this page.

How to get there;

I suggest taking I75 north to 675, and following 675 up to Exit 20 (Dayton Yellow Springs Rd) Make a right off the exit ramp onto Dayton Yellow Springs Rd, and follow it into Yellow Springs. Make a left onto Rt 68 (Xenia Ave) go a short distance (2/10 miles) and make a right onto Rt 343. Go about a mile, and make a right onto Rt 370. Go about a mile and turn left into the John Bryan camping entrance. Make a left at the first opportunity and follow the road back to the Orton Picnic Area which is at the end of the road. Yes I am aware that there is a way to go up I71 for the people on the East side. Thats an option just allow extra time 15-20 min for getting thru the park, using the bathroom, making a wrong turn etc. My hikes leave on time. If your habitually late you will have to find us.

    It is and has been raining here since about 8:15 a.m. If you're going to hike, plan your dress accordingly. I live in this area... so I am probably canceling. I can go there anytime when I don't have to get all soggy. <g>
