Susquehana State Park-rescheduled

  • November 14, 2009 · 10:15 AM

Reschedule of the early August posting of this hike; due to the October hike's rainout. Hopefully better weather this time around.

This hike is taken from www.midatlantichikes.com:http://midatlantichik... is the trail description, along with a mapped route. While the circumnavigation of the park is about 9 miles, most of it is fairly level/rolling hills. Fido, as long as he/she is well behaved, is more than welcome along on this hike. My dog will be with me. Directions to the park: http://www.google.com... NOTE: The directions take you to one of the park gates. We will be meeting at the old grist mill by the river bank--not the park gate. Please note this on the attached map. In doubt, please call the cell listed above. I will be there at/before 9. As always, carpooling is highly encouraged. My cell is [masked]

This is an 8.7 mile circumnavigation of the park. The first 1.5 miles is along the old canal and railroad grade (The latter was constructed to deliver construction supplies to the Conowingo Hydro-electric dam further upriver.). YWe'll be able to view the river for this entire stretch. Then, climb up to a low plateau and walk through alternating woods and fields. Besides the river and canal you’ll pass an old Flint Tower that remains from the Revolutionary War, an extremely old American Beech and, if you find the un-marked trail, a White Oak that also dates back to the revolution. The starting and ending point is an operational Grist Mill that dates back to 1798.

it was a great hike, the weather held up. the hills were a great workout with frequent level ground for a quick recovery.Everyone was great fun especially dear Scarlett who lead the way and never once faltered over the slippery leaves - but then having four legs is a definite benefit when hiking.
