Buzzard Hill - Bluemont dayhike crossposted from Washington backpackers site

  • April 10, 2010 · 9:00 AM

A hike' I've been aiming to get at for months, and have been thwarted by bad weather multiple times. This hike is posted on the Washington backpackers meetup website: http://www.meetup.com.... The trail description comes from www.hikingupward.com , which, as always has its nifty little calorie calculator at the ready: http://www.hikingupwa.... "This hike is the the sister hike of Raven Rocks. Starting at Bears Den it heads south on The Appalachian Trail for 4.5 miles to the top of Buzzard Hill. Although the length is only 9.0 miles the vertical ascents over the ridge spurs add up to over 3000 feet of vertical gain by the time you get back." 9.0 miles, 5.5 hours, est. Multiple hills to climb on this out and back.....go to the website and take a look at the hike profile. If stream crossings (there are two, each way, for a total of 4 crossings on this out and back) and steep inclines aren't your thing, this is probably not the hike for you.

    Dawn-
I think we're still working out where we're meeting, but it looks like Francesco is going to be driving. Send him or me a message so we can add you to the email chain! Oh, and we moved the time to 6:30, fyi
Sounds like you have all the right equipment.

This looks like it will be a tough one, but I am adventurist and ready for this big adventure/Task. This will be my first hike, besides my water, good hiking shoes, lotion, energy bars. Is there anything else I should bring or be aware of? And if you could let me know if we all are meeting anywhere or just at the spot? I am coming from Laurel and have no idea where this place is.

Jon - Cool. According to google is a 1h40m drive, so we should leave at 7am. Shoot me a message sometime next week.

Francesco - I'd be interested in car pooling - let me know some details and I have no problem meeting in Catonsville, or elsewhere.

I would like to organize a carpool from Baltimore. I live downtown and plan to take the I-70. We could meet downtown or at the park n ride in Catonsville.
