This trip will take us to the Roan Mountain Balds, the greatest concentration of Balds in the World! As a bonus, we will enjoy the Rhododdendron in Bloom for one of the greatest displays in the United States! This is an 8 hour drive to the Northern NC/TN border to another one of those trips you have to do....before you die! You can find a description here: http://www.cs.unca.ed..., here: http://www.romanticas..., and a pretty picture here:
http://wncnaturally.c..., so you can see this is a very special place! At Trail Days last month, the AT Through hikers told me, it was there favorite place and the rhododendron were not even blooming yet! We will start at Carver's Gap and walk 7 miles to Yellow Mountain Trail Shelter on the AT, ditch our packs and day hike on to Hump Mountain Balds, then back to the shelter, then backpack out again the next day...or if we are so overwhelmed can come back on Monday, depending on the group! Please be prepared to walk up to 21 miles total and 14 with a backpack on. You must also be prepared for rain and a great time! This is top flight summer backpacking, so saddle up, make that commitment and let's head down to Roan Mountain, NC/TN!
