White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run

Back by popular request--quite possibly the best waterfall hike in SNP. Route taken from www.hikingupward.com As always, the site has it's handy little calorie calculator at the ready. http://www.hikingupwa...
8 miles
5.0 hours plus a half hour for lunch
2,450 ft elevation change
N38 32.356 W78 20.961

This hike has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Shenandoah National Park. Combining two out-and-back hikes, White Oak Canyon & Cedar Run, this loop starts at the bottom of the valley and cuts over near the top of the ridge. With five major falls, numerous smaller cascades and pools, this circuit hike is one of the best

The googlemaps direction finder thing on the hiking upward page seems to be working relative well, now. (In years past, it tried to lead people on an entertaining chase through old fire roads). CARPOOL options: the rte 70 park and ride is probably the best option for Baltimore area people. I'll not be at the carpool site; I'll be coming there from Virginia this time. If meeting at the carpool site: plan for a bout a three hour ride. (Or a three hour tour....) I'll meet you all at the trailhead. Look for the grey/silver Mazda6 with yakrakcs. Cell is [masked]. Reception may be spotty in the park. Dogs are welcome, BUT: think ahead before bringing Fido. This is an 8 mile, relatively steep (and fairly steady uphill) hike. In Virginia, in July. While there are watering holes along most of the trail, it'd be very easy for a dog to overheat. If it's gonna be warm, you may want to leave the furry one at home. It'll be a last minute decision whether my own dog comes with me on this one. SNP charges $15/car, unless you have a season pass.

thanks for letting us know. Good to hear you got the hike in, anyways. didn't get to see the bear.

We also got caught in the storm. good way to cool off, though....

Sorry I missed the group...my fault, really. I went to the wrong trailhead (Skyline Dr, MM45). When I realized, it was too late. I came to SNP to hike, so I did this one myself. Other than being caught in a downpour, I saw a bear, a few very large wild turkeys, and a fawn with a doe, all at close range. I added Crescent Rock to make it an even 10 miles. Overall, a hike I will not soon forget... I didn't want anyone thinking I blew this one off...

Let's carpool! Remember the Gulf! For those of us South of the above site, I suggest either the park and ride at Dorsey Run and #32, or the park and ride at Centerville-these sites ones used by other groups. Email me
