Always on the lookout for new routes...... This one comes from the www.hikingupward.com website (the one with the handly little calorie counter). Trail description and The googlemaps.com direction finder for the trailhead
are found here: http://www.hikingupwa...
The Stony Mountain circuit is one of the more secluded loops in the SNP. Overshadowed by the more popular Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon hikes just to the north. With great views of the valley from Stony Mountain, and a nice swimming hole on the Rose River, this is one hike worth checking out.
10.1 miles overall. 5.5 hours plus a half hour for lunch
1,840 ft elevation change.
Fido is welcome, but be mindful of the weather when deciding whether to bring him/her. SNP charges $15/car, unless one has a season pass. A convenient meeting palce for car-poolers seems to be the Savage MARC lot, Dorsey Rd and Rte 32. From Savage, it's a 2 1/2 hr ride; carpoolers should leave Savage NLT 0715.
If you respond maybe, please change to yes or no NLT Thurs afternoon.
My cell is[masked] 7280...but cell coverage is spotty to nonexistant south and west of Warrenton (about 50 miles short of the trailhead)- I may not be able to recieve calls later than 0900.
