Per request, it's (past) time to revisit the Billy Goat trail.
Trail notes (especially for those who have not been here): Although there is no NET elevation change, this is stiall a moderately strenous hike. Nearly all of the two miles out is rock scramble, on exposed rock surfaces (inlcuding one short, but steep scramble down a cliff face). IF you have agility or balace issues, or a serious fear of heights, this may not be for you. Per Park rules: Dogs are NOT allowed on section A. (Trust me you would not want to carry Fido on this one anyways) The return leg is along the flat, level C&O canal towpath....no challenges there....OR: if the group's up for it: we can return along the Billy Goat, and do the rock scramble in reverse.
This hike is on exposed rock surfaces. Therefore rain/snow that morning will cancel/postpone. Wet rock is not fun. This hhike is also being cross posted with Washington Backpackers.
Meeting Place: Park in the lot across from Old Anglers Inn. Walk to the bottom of the lot in the direction of the towpath. The address for the Old Anglers Inn is 10800 MacArtuhur Blvd, Potomac MD. Look for parking areas across the road from the Inn. Directions here:http://www.google.com...
This is a moderate 4 mile hike minutes from the hustle and bustle of our nation’s capitol. It’s a great place to develop “hiking legs”. For a place so close to a major metropolis there is so much …. wild power and natural beauty here as you watch the Potomac force its way through the rocky crags of Great Falls and the narrows just above Mather’s Gorge
The hike description is found on the midatlantichikes webiste: http://www.midatlanti...
There are a couple of spots locally for a post hike lunch, if so inclined.
