Sugarloaf Mountain - 7(ish) miles - Moderate

Moderate hike...not suited for novice/first timers...

Lets climb a (small) mountain!!  Sugarloaf is an outlier of the Blue Ridge Mountain range and is located about 10 miles south of Frederick, Maryland (it’s somewhat of a neighbor to Catoctin and Cunningham Falls). The route we will be taking is a combination of the Blue Northern Peaks Trail (5 miles of nice scenery) and the White Mountain Loop Trail (2.5 mile trail that loops the summit) for a total of 7 miles (there is some overlap that accounts for the .5 mile discrepancy). At the end there will be the option to continue to the Summit on the Green Trail (only .25 miles). The Green Trail starts at the same location as the Blue Trail so for anyone who isn’t interested in this last segment the parking lot will be right there.

You can view the trail map here: http://www.sugarloafmd.com/images/maps/102709_trailmap.pdf

Parking: we will be meeting in the parking lot at the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain Drive (Blue and Green Trail start here).

This park is free for both entry and parking so no need to bring extra money! Just your lovely selves, water and snacks for yourself if that’s your thing.

Dogs are permitted but must be leashed at all times.

Thanks, Judith (and everyone)! I had a great time. I wish you all had been able to stay up on the summit for a bit, though. I ended up chilling up there for about 45 minutes or so - 'twas beautiful! Hope you had a great lunch. Lizzy sends her love! Remember to tune in on June 13 during the second hour of Midday with Dan Rodricks, on WYPR, for our show on "Pulp Fiction." :-)

Hey, everyone! Don't look for me at Security Boulevard - I'll just make my own way to the trailhead and see you close to 10am!

    May 31

  • TINA W

Peeps - I'm already awake having coffee & giving myself some heat therapy. I'm pretending & imagining that I'm joining you today;-) Have a great hike! I'll miss ya guys & gals:(

  • Pam

I will not be able to make the hike due to an allergic reaction and no sleep.

    May 31

  • Chris

Since I'm now on the hike, I'll probably meet you at the park & ride for carpooling, just in case there's overflow and someone needs a ride. I have to drive, since I wouldn't want Lizzy's dog hairs to get in someone else's car. If I don't see you there, then I'll meet you all at the park! See you Saturday!

OK - thanks! I have a black Mazda CX5. Right now, I am leaning towards just going straight to the hike, as I have a lot of errands to take care of tomorrow morning. If you don't see me by 8:45 (or whenever you're leaving), then I'll just meet you at the hike.

    Hi Everyone
Does anyone have a spare Hiking Pole I can borrow? I absentmindedly left my in Westminster. On a strenuous hike a couple weeks ago I twisted my ankle and don't want to repeat it.

    • Chris R.

Mine are in my car you can use them

I have one too you can use. I've been practicing rolling my ankles so they can just bend like rubber. :-)

I guess I could try and read through the gazillion posts but instead I'll add another. Is the I70 & 695 park n ride a staging/carpool point for this one? I'm meeting Mike in Towson then planning to head to that PNR around 8:45 to pick up anybody else that wants to carpool. A few $ for gas is always appreciated. I should have room for 1 or 2 more depending on whether one or two dogs come with me.

I will also be there. Red Hyundai Velociraptor.

Hello all, I know I'm a little late to the conversation. I live in the Laurel area and have no problem driving anyone who wants a ride. Otherwise, see you there!

    1 · May 21

    • Jeremy

You're right, I hadn't read the description in a while and was getting the instructions confused with another event. We'll just meet at the Harris Teeter and go straight to the mountain. Good catch.

      May 30

    • Jeremy

That being said, let's shoot for 8:30-8:45.

Hi there, I'm incredibly late to the conversation. I absolutely love this hike! I'm more than happy to offer a ride to anyone else that may need it. There is also a great winery at the bottom of the mountain if anyone is interested after the hike http://www.smvwinery.com/
