At-MD section hike (2): from Reno Monument Rd to the Gathland State Park

This will be the lower half of the section 3 and continuation of previous AT-MD hiking. On the trail, we will make a little side trip (~ 0.5 mile round) to see the old and new Rocky Run Shelters (photos). We will hike 6.9 miles (including the side trip) from North to South. The trail is moderate.

Early shelters were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 40s. Since 70s, new shelters have been built to replace deteriorating old ones and to accommodate increasing number of hikers. After building a new shelter, the old one was either demolished or preserved for history. This old shelter made of logs is one of 15 remaining shelters built by CCC. The shelter was considered for tearing down, but it was survived for a historical value, and still being used for hikers. The photos were taken in 2008 during the construction and repair time.

We will meet at the Gathland State Park and will shuttle to the start point.
At the beginning, there is a small Civil War related place.

Direction to the Gathland State Park from Frederick:
1. Take Rt 340/West/South for ~ 12miles
2. Make right onto Rt 17 to Burkittsville (~ 4 miles)
3. Make left onto Main St
4. When you see the War Memorial Arch, Make right onto Arnoldstown RD
5. Make immediate left to the parking lot.

    Dear All,

Thank you for attending this hike.
The trail was covered with more snow and icy than I expected.
But we all made it and it was fun.
I also hope you found a safe way to home.

    Happy Trails,

    sooni

I had a great time. I think the snow and ice and deer hunters and it a memorable experience.

Besides having to shuttle our cars to the start and finish, it was a great hike with good company.

    Hi All,

It appears that the weather will be good on Sat, 40s and mostly sunny. But the trail temperature is always a litttle bit lower, therefore, please be prepare.

See you all at the Gathland SP on Sat.

For ~7 mile distance, if we hike 2 miles/hour, 4 hours would be good.

This looks like approximately 7 miles. Anyone have an approximate Idea of how long it will last? Giving or catching a ride from Ellicott city is fine with me. Mike Hill

I am interested in going. Is anybody coming from the Columbia area? I'd like to carpool (either drive or ride/give some gas money), if possible.

Hi Aubrey, I'm not sure if I'll be going but if I do, we could carpool. I live in Catonsville and wouldn't mind driving because I would want to bring my dog.
