This will be the lower half of the section 3 and continuation of previous AT-MD hiking. On the trail, we will make a little side trip (~ 0.5 mile round) to see the old and new Rocky Run Shelters (photos). We will hike 6.9 miles (including the side trip) from North to South. The trail is moderate.
Early shelters were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 40s. Since 70s, new shelters have been built to replace deteriorating old ones and to accommodate increasing number of hikers. After building a new shelter, the old one was either demolished or preserved for history. This old shelter made of logs is one of 15 remaining shelters built by CCC. The shelter was considered for tearing down, but it was survived for a historical value, and still being used for hikers. The photos were taken in 2008 during the construction and repair time.
We will meet at the Gathland State Park and will shuttle to the start point.
At the beginning, there is a small Civil War related place.
Direction to the Gathland State Park from Frederick:
1. Take Rt 340/West/South for ~ 12miles
2. Make right onto Rt 17 to Burkittsville (~ 4 miles)
3. Make left onto Main St
4. When you see the War Memorial Arch, Make right onto Arnoldstown RD
5. Make immediate left to the parking lot.
