The Lost Pond Trail gives some awesome views of the Big Gunpowder River as this trail follows the flood plain down river. We'll be searching for the Lost Pond in the middle of the upland woods. Part of this trail is unmarked so we will be in for an adventure. On the return portion we'll take a slight detour to the Sawmill Trail and then down under Rt 1 upstream to the mouth of Long Green Creek for the hidden pool. It's not really hidden, but it sure sounds more exciting that way doesn't it?
The Lost Pond was formed by a man made berm that was breached at some point draining the pond and leaving behind a wetland that is teaming with unusual plants and wildlife. We'll also be stopping by to see the Pot Rocks. Circular depressions in the bedrock that fill with water when the tides are up. These circular depressions have been carved out by the river and time to what you see today. As part of the Sawmill Trail, we'll be looking for the Mill Race for the old Carroll Sawmill which was dug by hand in the early 1800's. we should also be able to find a short section of wall that was part of the sawmill's foundation.
