Snowshoeing Through Tunnels and Sheds w/ Lunch Overlooking Beautiful Donner Lake

  • Feb 9, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

I did this hike 2 years ago, and this was shot at the entrance to the first tunnel.

Not sure the scenery gets much better than what you'll take in on this hike!

Never snowshoed before? Then you definitely don't want to miss this one.

The tunnels are frozen inside w/ beautiful ice formations like you haven't seen before. Some tunnels are lit w/ shafts of light, while others are lit only by our headlamps and flashlights. The floors of the tunnels are like icefields which make this one exciting hike! The views outside the tunnels are just incredible. You'll see the mighty Sierras and eventually Donner Lake, where we'll have lunch.

This is not your typical hike, nor are the views at all typical. Having done this one before, I can assure you this will be an amazing adventure you will never forget.

The hike is about 6 miles and is flat w/ some incline - and I'll call it moderate because we're in snowshoes. This will be an all day trip, and we'll go for dinner after the hike. You'll be hungry from burning calories all day, and we'll be back that evening.

You can reserve your snowshoes w/ poles at any REI for approx $30-$35 to pick up the day before (Friday). Equipment is due back in at REI on Monday - perfect deal.

What To Bring:

Snowshoes and poles

Waterproof Boots

Ski Gloves

Daypack with snacks, food (lunch) and vino!

Warm layered clothes & a plastic tarp or blanket to sit on at lunch

Head warmer (hat, knit hat, hood, etc.)

Headlamp or flashlight

Water

Camera - You'll have many, many, unique pictures to show your friends

Sense of Adventure and Merriment!

$5 Admin fee - Thx!

Directions:

Hwy 80 East toward Reno for approximately 73 miles.
Exit I-80 at Soda Springs/Norden Exit 174.
Turn right at stop sign and follow the road for 3.5 miles. Donner Ski Ranch will be on the left and we'll park on the right side of the road by the maintenance buildings. It will be obvious when we get there, but then retrospect is always the knowledgeable perspective, now isn't it?

Thanks Chas and everybody for wonderful day - and company! I don't think GPS is exactly device of choice for walking through tunnels, but for what it's worth, here is our "track": http://connect.garmin.com/activity/272449891

I need to interject too. I think the overall consensus was that this was a great hike, great weather, and a well-thought out excursion. I think most of us had never been to this spot or for that matter had ever tried snowshoeing before and we have Chas to thank for creating the opportunity to do do this. I'm not quite sure where 'leadership' comes into play since this was a casual get together.

    February 11, 2013

  • Diane

Scattered leadership? Sorry I have to jump in. From what point was there any confusion? Starting from the park n ride it was made very clear to stay together, park together, gear up together, enter the tunnel together. Chas, I’ve never been on an outing with you but our carpool conversation home was “ I like his leadership, firm, and direct without being overbearing”. The ones that went ahead on their own may have felt a bit scattered. Our middle group knew exactly what was ahead and enjoyed hearing a bit of the tunnels /sheds history. I know our car of 4 gives you kudos!!

  • Ron R

Amazing sites, great weather, scattered leadership.

Chas~ You’re an excellent and more than patient organizer/ leader. You unquestionably have the ability to make sure everyone feels welcomed, comfortable and safe. Thanks for taking us all to an amazing place most will never get to see & enjoy.

What a day! We had 52 snowshoers, 30* temp, and tons of happy faces out there. Having colder weather was actually better, because it was more consistant between the tunnels and outside avoiding the need to remove jackets when hitting the sunshine. Thx everyone for making this an outstanding day.

I've been home sick from work the last two days. Not sure how I'll feel by Saturday. Not sure if I will have enough strength by then. Hopefully I'll have a better grasp on things by tomorrow. Just don't know.

    February 7, 2013

  • Jarda

Ok, I am willing to drive from Roseville if needed. Don't have SUV, but should have chains if worst comes to worst. Can take 2 people comfortably, probably 3. And I am staying for dinner.

I suppose we can just figure details on the spot.

    February 7, 2013

    • Sheila S

It always seems to work out well at the park and ride.

      February 7, 2013

    January 26, 2013

      February 6, 2013

I think I'm going to pass on this meetup. I hope u all have fun! Too many people on a single hike for me, too confusing to struggle around looking for a carpool buddy. Have a great trip!

Anyone looking to carpool that does not have one - we will set them up at Sunsplash. There's several people coming from the Bay Area, some of which may still have room. Just show up at Sunsplash and we'll work the rides out.

    February 2, 2013

    • Jarda

Thanks Chas. I would definitely like to carpool from Sunsplash. I may even drive, depending on the situation, although if the conditions up are really bad, I'd rather not too, since as I mentioned, I don't have a chains. Then again, if it really looks like they're needed, I may just get them. We'll see.

      February 2, 2013

  • Heather L.

Are we planning to carpool from the sun splash stop in Roseville at 8am? I would love to carpool with someone!

    January 26, 2013

    • Michele

You can get in my car. I have chains. Gas money would be cool. Its a metallic blue Mazda3 hatchback 36 mpg generally so not too bad.

      January 30, 2013

  • Jarda

Anybody coming form Bay Area? I could even drive, just don't have the chains (not sure how much they're needed).

    January 28, 2013

  • Rowena

What's the $5.00 fun fee? Is this towards a hundred year old bottle of red wine? Some kind of gift bags for everyone? For you Chas? Just wondering.
