Aug 1-4
Thursday night
Friday night
Saturday night

Optional itinerary for Thursday
8:00am caravan from REI parking lot off Exposition Blvd.
12:00pm hike around Pinecrest Lake, if time we'll go on the side trail to Cleo's Baths.
~4:00 pm arrive at Peaceful Pines
~5:30pm Dinner don't be late!

Camp Peaceful Pines is in the Stanislaus National Forest in the Sonora Pass (one pass north of Yosemite) near the Dardenelles. Across the Clark Fork Road to the south is the Sandy Flat Campground and a good stream for wading and fishing. North of camp is the "Carson Iceberg Wilderness Area" with the 9,328 ft. peak of "Lightning Mountain."

Camp is located at a little over 6,000 feet. There is limited cell phone service (you must drive back up Highway 108 toward Sonora) and no internet service.

There is a main lodge, kitchen, and dining room. They have cabins and beds with bare mattresses. There are restrooms with hot water and showers at both end of camp. There is a volleyball court, ping pong tables, and two large campfire pits. A small stream runs through camp.

You will need your own toiletries, towels, linens, blankets (or sleeping bag) . Bring a good flashlight and warm clothes (it can be cold at night!).

$30 per day includes ALL meals! Breakfasts and dinners are provided and served in the dining hall. Bagged lunches are made in the dining hall each morning immediately after breakfast. The days will be spent hiking or on other activities of you choice. If you bring your own food, you must put it in a designated place in the dining hall. There are bears in the area and no one wants one in a cabin/car. (I've actually seen them in camp.) The camp is powered by a generator which turns off at 10:00 p.m. Participants are asked to help with chores. Chores include washing dishes, washing pots and pans, sweeping the dining hall, setting table, and cleaning the bathrooms.

The cost for this event is $120 for four days ($30 per DAY, not night) Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Please pay $30 to hold your spot (non-refundable). The rest of the reservation fee needs to be paid upon arrival at camp. Jeanine Ewert and Shannon Brinkley will accept cash deposits as well. A receipt via email will be sent to you.

Allow 4.5 hours for driving (everyone who thought it would take 4 hours ended up taking longer than they thought and a few missed dinner the first night.)

Hikers and Company will be the only group using the camp on these dates. We are asked to respect the grounds. The camp is run by the Church of the Brethren, which is a nonprofit organization. The church has a permit from the U.S. Forest Service to run the camp. Please leave pets at home. Alcohol is only allowed in unidentifiable containers.

There are numerous hiking options varying from strenuous to easy. Some hikes will be in the Sonora Pass area, including Sonora Peak and Stanislaus Peak. Hikes along Clark Fork Road include Disaster Creek, Arnot Creek and Sword Lake. It is also possible to ride a bike from camp to the end of the road (3 miles). At Pinecrest Lake (20 miles before Clark Fork Road on Highway 108) is a hike to Cleo's Baths in addition to kayaking and a wonderful public beach for swimming. There is a short 30 minute hike to Sunrise Rock, just east of camp, to watch the sunrise.

The camp also has maps of hikes in this area.

I had a great time, loved the food. I have champion bruises from my crash but am getting better. Did anyone pick up my fly fishing book? I can't find it and Ben says it is not at camp. If you have it let me know.

I so wanted to go on this trip! I love reading the comments. Sorry I had to cancel. I am too concerned about leaving my sickly cat in the care of someone else. Talk about being tied to my cats! I'll get over it and hope to camp with you at some future time.

Hi! I can't wait to see everyone on Thursday for our third annual trip to Peaceful Pines. I will not arrive until late on Thursday. I'm coming with Chuck right after work. Shannon will help get everyone situated and of course some of you are old hands and know the ropes so please help everyone else get settled in. Please remember to leave pets at home and that alcohol needs to be hidden. We usually leave it in the trunk of a car and pour it into an unmarked cup. Since Peaceful Pines is a church facility we want to respect their rules while meeting our needs. :) For those of you joining this trip for the first time WELCOME. For those of you returning WELCOME BACK.
Marianne, our trusty cook, is already there for an event and will stay for us. Expect great food/wonderful snacks by the campfire. The camp superintendent from last year, Ben Bear, is returning. Get set for some awesome flute playing!!
    See everyone soon!

Hi Shannon. Will the proprietors take credit card, check or cash only for our lodging balance? Looking forward to the trip.

    July 28, 2013

    • Jeanine E.

Peaceful Pines accepts cash or checks. The setting is very rustic with no Internet or phone service but it is beautiful and oh so relaxing. Glad you are joining us.

Other than the horseback riding on Saturday, are there organized activities, ( especially hiking) or is everybody just doing their own thing in small groups?

    July 22, 2013

    • Shannon B

So far we have not planned specific hikes. I plan to poll the group with some suggestions and see what folks want. For sure I want to spend at least one day at one of the lakes.

      July 22, 2013

  • Shannon B

A small group of us are horseback riding in Kennedy Meadows on Saturday. It's about $50 for a half day. Please join us if you want to go. I hear it's a cool loop they do with the horses.
