Ranger-Led Wildflower Hike at Lake Berryessa

I would like to invite everyone to join a Park Ranger for a leisurely hike on the Smittle Creek Trail along the western shoreline of Lake Berryessa, about an hour and a half west of Sacramento. Enjoy spring wildflowers and get some fresh air and exercise while learning about the natural and human history of the area on an easy-to-moderate 2.6 mile, one-way guided hike. The trail travels through a shaded Blue Oak woodland, affording hikers scenic views and peaceful surroundings. Meet at the south end of the Smittle Creek Day Use Area parking lot, off of Berryessa-Knoxville Road. Vehicles can be shuttled to the trail end point at Coyote Knolls within the Oak Shores Day Use Area. Hikers may stay with the ranger for the entire 4-hour hike or leave early if they choose. Bring a lunch to enjoy on the lake. For details and directions, please contact Mike McGraw at[masked], ext. 112 or [masked].

Thanks all for coming out to Lake Berryessa to enjoy this gorgeous day! Ranger Mike said he had a great group out there with him. For those of you who didn't make it, we'd love to see you out here enjoying the lake on your own one of these days!

Terrific hike & hope we can retain Ranger Mike/rangers in general....we need em'. Thanks again for an informative, fun hike.

Ranger Mike was awesome; he was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora & fauna, the history and ecology of the area and was very easy and interesting to listen to while he was sharing his wealth of information with us! Lake Berryessa is a pretty and peaceful lake surrounded by well-maintained trails that are easy to hike. The lupin & buttercup flowers were abundant & beautiful!

The ranger was great, and enjoyed the people that showed up. Suggestion; Have Roseville Sun Splash as a car pool area.

I am not going after all.
I have been to Smittle Creek Day use area several times because it is our last bathroom stop before the Zim Zim Falls hike.
Stay on Hwy 128 way past Winters and the dam. Maybe 20-30 (hard to say) minutes past the dam you will come to Knoxville Berryessa Road, turn right. I don’t think there is a stop sign there, but there is a store on the right and the road is marked. Once you get on that road you still have a long way to go. It follows the lake all the way. Smittle Creek day use area is about 30-40 (again hard to say) minutes down on the right hand side.
    See you all next time.

    • Victoria P.

Sorry you can't make it! Thanks for the nice detailed description. Once you turn on Knoxville Road, it is only about 8 or 9 miles - ten or 15 minutes.

    Are dogs permitted

    March 22, 2013

    • Victoria P.

Unfortunately no. Dogs are permitted on the trails if they're on a 6' leash or shorter, but for this hike the ranger leading it requested no dogs. He would like the chance for the group to see wildlife and he feels if there are dogs in the area it is less of a chance.

    March 19, 2013

    Sandy

    March 12, 2013

    • Shannon B

Hi Sandy, are you still planning on coming? I don't see your RSVP. I don't mean to be grumpy, but it's not okay to to just show up on a limited hike. As of right now there are three openings. You should RSVP for yourself plus 2. I look forward to meeting you!

      March 21, 2013

    • Shannon B

If your two frienns are already on the list and you really want to go, send Victoria an email and I'm pretty sure she will add you once she knows what's up.

      March 21, 2013

  • Lyn A

For those of us who are planning on meeting at the trailhead, is there a contact number we could have in
    case some problem arises?

    March 21, 2013

  • Craig O.

It says that there is a spot open, but RSVP is closed. How do i sign up? Also, looking for carpool from Roseville area.

    March 18, 2013

    • Victoria P.

I apologize, I had the settings wrong (I'd never done a wait list before). It should have spots open for the wait list at this point.

      March 21, 2013

  • Cora

Hi, I can drive or carpool as well. 7:45 am at 11th and P, correct?

    March 20, 2013

  • Ron R

    I'll be at 11th & P at 7:45 hoping for a ride.

I was up there yesterday with another group, The flowers and butterflies are awesome. There's even a buttercup that fooled me into thinking it is an orchid. If you go along Putah creek, the Newts are hanging out in the water, in quantity! Lots of great photo opps.

  • Heather

freeing up a spot since something has come up with my mom that makes going a maybe. enjoy!

    March 18, 2013

  • Craig O.

How do you get on a waiting list, and why is there not a carpool spot, say Roseville Sun Splash?

    March 17, 2013

    • Victoria P.

I believe to get on the waiting list you 'sign up' in the typical manner, though I can't say that I've ever done it myself. As far as carpooling goes, definitely coordinate with others through comments. It looks like there is a group meeting at 11th & P Street.

Still room for another passenger, Helen? If so, count me in (will pay my share of gas expense, btw).

    March 18, 2013

      Sure

      March 18, 2013

    • Helen H

We need to meet at 11th & P st about 7:45. See you then.

      March 18, 2013

  • Helen H

I'm driving, I have room for four. Meeting at 11th & P street.

    March 17, 2013

  • Lyn A

My car is full, so will meet up with you there.

    March 17, 2013

  • Caroline C.

Are we meeting somewhere for those people interested in carpooling?

    March 14, 2013

  • Victoria P.

I've set it up so that there is a waiting list, but I'd like to keep it capped at 35 hikers. There will be hikers from other groups joining us as well.

    March 14, 2013

  • Kathy B.

is there still room for 2?

    March 12, 2013

  • Susan C.

No guest, sorry, but I guess that makes room for one more...

    March 10, 2013

  • Victoria P.

I've gone ahead and closed this to RSVP's since there are so many interested. Please, if you change your mind or are unable to go, change your response so that I can open it up again for others to go! See y'all out on the trail.

    are dogs permitted?

    March 7, 2013

    • Victoria P.

While we do welcome dogs at Lake Berryessa and on the trails (as long as they're attached to you by a 6' leash), the ranger leading this outing requests that there are no dogs along. His reasoning is that he would like the group to have a chance to see wildlife, and often there is less of a chance of this if there are dogs in the area.

      March 8, 2013

  • Laura H.

Sounds perfect! I've never been there, either.
