Royal Gorge 16 miles VERY STRENUOUS

~16 miles round trip (downhill first into the gorge)
This is a very STRENUOUS hike and it's not that spectacular until you get to the bottom. Please be careful of your ability level.
This is an all-day hike. Please come completely prepared with lots of food, water, electrolytes (or salty snacks), and all your gear including a GPS if you have one.

The below link to a mountain biker's blog is what we're hoping to do. It has tons of amazing pictures: http://forums.mtbr.com/california-norcal/royal-gorge-ous-adventure-738166.html

Dogs okay
Marilyn's link below describing the Palisade Creek hike says it's only 2,000" feet gain on the way out, but I think we should be prepared for 3,000 just in case.

HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE RECOMMENDED
DIRECTIONS to the trailhead are on the link below (compliments of Sierra Club) but it is not the same hike. PLEASE meet us at the park and ride or somewhere else along the way because the trailhead is TRICKY.

My GPS read much different. 14.9 miles at 2848 elevation gain. Take your pick or go in the middle. Thanks Shannon. A great work out and much more beautiful than I expected.

Thanks Shannon for a great hike. One of the prettier spots in our area. 16 miles 3800 ft elevation gain in 9 hrs 45 min. I even got to see the Heath Falls Overlook.

and thanks for showing us the petroglyphs!

      June 23, 2013

Yes, they do. GPS data is horizontal so there is about a 10% error. The steeper the trail the bigger the error.

I would like to thank the following: Hank, for driving all of us (Andy, Alex, Teresa and me); what a fun bunch; Tom, for keeping me company on the way back and providing me with water when I ran out; and last but not least, the organizer Shannon for putting on such great hikes for all of us to enjoy. And to all of you hikers that attended this hike, you ROCK!

I live in Alta, about 30 miles from the trail head. I'll meet you at the Soda Springs gas station. Looking froward to this hike, I've been wanting to get up there ever since the land was acquired by the Truckee-Donner Land Trust.

I am coming from Tahoe city with a friend and our dogs. Where can we meet you to follow you in and at what time. We have a 4wheel drive car.

    June 19, 2013

There is a gas station just off the Soda Springs/Norden Exit aka Donner Pass Road on the south (?) side. We'll be there around 7:45am, maybe 8.

Is the ultimate destination for this hike, other than making it back to the trial head in one piece, to get to Palisade Falls?

    June 18, 2013

    • Shannon B 😍

Marilyn thinks Palisade Falls is called Rattlesnake Falls. When you get to the river it is slightly downstream.

shannon can I come- let me know if any openings happen

      June 21, 2013

The Land Trust purchased Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area, not Royal Gorge itself. Royal Gorge is a couple thousand feet below the ski area on the North Fork of the American River. While you will be driving through some of the Land Trust area, the trail is probably mostly on Forest Service land. Royal Gorge is part of the Wild & Scenic Rivers system and is managed by the Tahoe National Forest.

    Hi Shannon

    Is there a waiting list.....

    June 18, 2013

  • Rachel G.

Hi Shannon, Jeff, Ly... this sounds like a fun hike. I have a Kia Sorneto, not 4x4 but an SUV with clearance, I will meet at the P&R and will be able to provide carpooling. :)

I better go on a few other hikes before I try to conquer this one.

I hate going down first and up at the end of the day, especially 3,000 feet up, but I am glutton for punishment. If you see me at the P & R I will be driving my truck (not 4WD) and will take on two cash paying crazy people. If you don't see me it means Shannon has scared me to my senses and I have opted out to be a couch potato and eat ice cream. :-)

    1 · June 17, 2013

  • Mike

I am interested in carpooling with someone that has a 4WD/high clearance vehicle. I will provide cold hard cash for compensation.

mike: you are smart, I could easily have ripped the oil sump off the bottom of my car. Parts of that road are definately "technical driving'.

I am glad you are going back to Royal Gorge. Enjoy the hike. When you get to the river, be sure to go just a little way downstream to see the waterfall. I also recommend going a short distance upstream to where the river is running over rocks and is no longer in a deep slot. You can then cross the river on rocks, climb up onto the rock slide, and look down into the old gorge that was blocked by the rock slide. Royal Gorge is one of my favorite places.

Hello everyone, I am interest in visiting Redwood National Park or one of the many Redwood State Parks. Also, im interest in a Tropical Rainforest, where is year around spring/summer conditions.

Are there any wild animals we have to worry about?

    May 21, 2013

    • Carrie P.

Okay, thanks. Just like to know what I need to know. I'm looking forward to meeting everybody. This should be really fun!

      May 22, 2013

    • Shannon B 😍

Yes, there are lots of wild animals in the Sierras. Some of them are dangerous. If you are new, this may not be the right hike to start on. Sixteen miles is extremely hard.

      May 22, 2013

  • Rachel G.

Shannon, its been a while since Ive been on a hike, but I have been running the trails. I sent you an email. look foward to seeing you again!!!
