Flippin' Friday - Avery's Pond to Auburn via Cardiac Hill - Adv 8-9 miles

Okay, so this one will be a bit tricky due to the necessity of organizing a shuttle, so please only sign up if you're truly committed.  It will change our logistics if you cancel at the last minute.

We'll firm up the shuttle plans a few days beforehand as well, just to ensure we're all on the same page.

So here's the plan:

We meet at Rattlesnake Road in Newcastle (the entrance road to the Avery's Pond hike for those who have done it with me and my kids' group) and hike the 8 - 9 miles along the river on the Pioneer Express Trail back to Auburn.

In keeping with tradition, we'll hike up Cardiac Hill and then back along the canal to the green gate at Maidu Drive, where Kathy and I will have our oversized vehicles parked so that can shuttle people back to the start where their cars will be.

We did this back in February and it's a beautiful trail..There's even a fab snack spot along the river to catch your breath before ascending Cardiac Hill.

This will be fun..but is not for the faint of heart nor the short of breath!

Anyway, here are the directions to the start and where we'll meet:

From Sacramento.

Drive 15 miles east on I-80 to Loomis, and exit at Horseshoe Bar Road.

Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Horseshoe Bar Road;bear left and then take the next left turn onto Horseshoe Bar Road.

Continue 3.4 miles to Auburn-Folsom Road.

Turn left and drive 2.3 miles to Newcastle Road, where you will turn right and go 1 mile to Rattlesnake Road.

Turn right again and follow the road another mile until the pavement ends.

Here you'll see a small parking area in front of a gate.  Let's meet here.

GPS coordinates are:

Latitude: N 38"49' 09"

Longitude: W 121" 05' 22"

This is close to the boat ramp.  In fact, if you look at where the map shows on the address above and just follow Rattlesnake Rd all the way to the end, you'll see Avery's Pond trail on the map.

What to bring:

As always, water, sturdy shoes, poles if desired and a good sense of humor.  We'll need it, I think!!!

Ditto. I actually fell asleep on the couch for 10 mins when I sat down to read the newspaper! Thanks everyone for the shuttle and for understanding the big mix up with the parking due to the boat show....

Unfortunately I did not bring any form of payment with me so I'm going to have to pass on the hike.

Good morning Carla,[masked]-seven eight nine five; please call so I know how to find PCWA where you will be for the car drop off. Thank you.

    Hello Carla,
I signed up and added one guest, apparently she has two others that would like to go and have a car at the meet-up spot and drive them back; would that be doable? Maybe they have enough room to let the "wait" list people join too? Let me know....thanks

EB, if you meet me at the entrance to Rattlesnake Bar (directions above) at 8:15 we can work our own shuttle to accomodate our dogs. Please call me[masked]

Yes, Diane, the PCWA station I'm referring to is the end of our hike, off Maidu Drive in Auburn. It's where the road looks like it dead ends at the gate and trails (it actually doesn't, but looks that way). I80 to Indian Hill exit. Left on Auburn Folsom, right on Maidu to the end of the road down to the canyon. PCWA on your left, parking on your right.

Bring money for parking at Rattlesnake Rd. Frank just told me that there is a $10 parking fee.

    May 30, 2013

    • Shannon B

I'm pretty sure we are parking just outside the park entrance.

      May 31, 2013

    • Carla

Beatrice, yes I've always parked where the road ends, just before you enter the park, so have never had to bring money. However, it doesn't hurt to bring some along just in case.

If it is possible I'd love another car so my daughter could come. I'll check in the am to see if another car is happening. Is there a map of the hike. I'd love a link if possible!

    May 30, 2013

    • Carla

Chris, unfortunately I'm sure at this point if anyone else is indeed bringing another car - I don't see any confirmations, so I'm going to go with what I know and that is that Kathy and I can tote 15 max back to the start. However, if you and your daughter would like to meet us at the PCWA off Maidu Drive tomorrow at 8.40a and leave your car there, you can hop a ride with Kathy, myself and my husband to the start and then you're all set to get home. If you do want to meet us, take i80 to Indian Hill exit. Drive into Auburn, make a right on Auburn Folsom, and a right on Maidu at the light. Follow Maidu until it stops at the gate across from PCWA.

Carla, I guess the one person she mentioned is not coming so it would only be her and one other. If we need another car, I could always meets at PCWA in Auburn, my car only holds 4 or 5 if one is tiny. Would you like me to do that or leave as is meeting at Rattlesnake Road?

    May 30, 2013

    • Carla

Diane, we have 15 people total. I believe Kathy's car holds 8 at a squeeze, mine 7 at a squeeze so we are maxed out with the 15 hikers we already have. Therefore, if the others come then yes we need another vehicle. However many you can fit in your car. We will meet at PCWA around 8.40a tomorrow if you can meet us there and leave the car, then we're good.

Carla, I live very near the end of the hike. Could I ride down with someone to the start of the hike - when you leave the other cars at the finish? That would mean one less person to get back to Rattlesnake Bar.

    April 24, 2013

    • Carla

Vickey, that would be great. I live just up the road from the trail end too, off Maidu. Why don't you plan to meet Kathy and I at the green gate (opposite the PCWA station on Maidu) in Auburn at 8.40am? I'll see if I can't have my hubby drive us to the start and drop us off. That way, worst case, if we can't fit everyone in, perhaps you wouldn't mind driving someone back to the start to collect their car.

      May 28, 2013

    • Carla

Vickey, just a thought. Are you able and/or willing to perhaps shuttle a few people back to the start tomorrow? If so, we could open up the hike to those on the waitlist. Let me know if you can help out..and if so, how many you can take in your car. Thanks...

    Hi everyone,
By all accounts, Friday is set to be a hot one. Bring plenty of water, bring a hat and don't forget the sunscreen! Forecasts are up in the 90's and this trail is not overly shaded....
    C U all then!

One more question. Estimated time of completion?

    May 28, 2013

    • Carla

That of course depends on the speed of the group, but we should be done, I hope, by 1pm latest...

I'm new but that's my b day. If I can get out of work. I would like to attend, I'm a new to the hiking for fun thing. Army... So should I wear army boots or trail running shoes from merrel. ?

    May 24, 2013

    • Carla

Amy, definitely go for the trail running shoes, unless you just want a harder workout. The trail is good, I usually just wear sneakers or light hiking shoes..... It's close to my b'day too. A great way to celebrate. Hope to see you then!
