Okay, so this one will be a bit tricky due to the necessity of organizing a shuttle, so please only sign up if you're truly committed. It will change our logistics if you cancel at the last minute.
We'll firm up the shuttle plans a few days beforehand as well, just to ensure we're all on the same page.
So here's the plan:
We meet at Rattlesnake Road in Newcastle (the entrance road to the Avery's Pond hike for those who have done it with me and my kids' group) and hike the 8 - 9 miles along the river on the Pioneer Express Trail back to Auburn.
In keeping with tradition, we'll hike up Cardiac Hill and then back along the canal to the green gate at Maidu Drive, where Kathy and I will have our oversized vehicles parked so that can shuttle people back to the start where their cars will be.
We did this back in February and it's a beautiful trail..There's even a fab snack spot along the river to catch your breath before ascending Cardiac Hill.
This will be fun..but is not for the faint of heart nor the short of breath!
Anyway, here are the directions to the start and where we'll meet:
Drive 15 miles east on I-80 to Loomis, and exit at Horseshoe Bar Road.
Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Horseshoe Bar Road;bear left and then take the next left turn onto Horseshoe Bar Road.
Continue 3.4 miles to Auburn-Folsom Road.
Turn left and drive 2.3 miles to Newcastle Road, where you will turn right and go 1 mile to Rattlesnake Road.
Turn right again and follow the road another mile until the pavement ends.
Here you'll see a small parking area in front of a gate. Let's meet here.
GPS coordinates are:
Latitude: N 38"49' 09"
Longitude: W 121" 05' 22"
This is close to the boat ramp. In fact, if you look at where the map shows on the address above and just follow Rattlesnake Rd all the way to the end, you'll see Avery's Pond trail on the map.
What to bring:
As always, water, sturdy shoes, poles if desired and a good sense of humor. We'll need it, I think!!!
