Bring rain gear, and waterproof boots, and a change of footwear for the drive back.
Difficulty: Easy but off trail most of the way over bare granite with water crossings
Distance: 5 miles, 500 ft elevation gain, option to go to Umpah and Twin Lakes
Map: Desolation Wilderness Map available from the forest service.
Trail Head: Wrights Lake Twin Lakes Trail. Go up US 50 to Wrights Lake Road, turn left. Turn right at intersection going to campground. Continue to the end. Be there at 9:15 to 9:30.
This series of waterfalls is one of the most beautiful in the area. It is well known but not on any trail. It is great for swimming later in the season, but now is the time to see it in all its glory. There is one slippery rock crossing and one log crossing but they are easy. I may elect to lead a group of 12 cross country 1000 ft elevation gain to Umpah Lake and Twin Lakes and descend on the Twin Lakes Trail. Since a permit is required to go beyond the main waterfall if more than 12 wish to go further we will go by order of sign up.
Parking at the trail head is limited so carpooling is necessary.
Pay driver $4:00 per hour. I think it's 3 hrs round trip.
Parking is free.
