The Identification, Prevention, & Treatment of Poison Oak

My name is Tom Collins and have started a new educational group called the Sacramento Valley Outdoor Education.

Shannon has allowed me to cross post this event here.

For our first event of this meetup, something that's important to us all, and it's FREE...

Poison Oak: It's an evil plant that's here to cause us misery. So I have developed this free class to help everyone either avoid or reduce this misery.

Identification: This will help you identify poison oak, and it's many forms, as well as some commonly misidentified plants. I will briefly also talk about two of poison oak's evil siblings, poison ivy & poison sumac, in case you do any traveling.

Prevention: How to avoid ever getting poison oak. Lots of information here.

Treatment: What to do when, despite your best efforts, you end up getting poison oak anyway.

The Class: Will last for about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. It will involve a lecture, including samples, lots of Q & A, and a small walk to identify poison oak in the wild. There's even some new exciting news about this subject that I will share with you.

Parking: The Sacramento County Parks Dept is allowing us to park at this event for free. Registered attendees will be emailed a parking pass.

About Me: I have spent hundreds of hours studying everything there is to know about the subject, and am now an expert in it.

Registering: You may register here. If you'd like to learn more about the group, you can go here. http://goo.gl/elA1r

I learned so much! Thanks for the cross posting and the follow-up info. I hope you will consider a piece regarding rattlesnakes. GOOD JOB!

    • Tom Collins ?.

I know about as much of rattlesnakes as most others. "Don't let them bite you". But if I find a subject matter expert on it, I'll be more than happy to schedule a class.

Well, our first event for the was a success. A lot of interest and a lot of good questions. I hope everyone who came learned at least one new thing.

Btw, 2 things I forgot to say:

If you meet any of these conditions, go to a doctor, and they will put you on steroids.
-If you get poison oak over 30% of your body,
-In your eyes, mouth, or throat,
-Or if the P.O. starts showing in places that you know for a fact were never exposed either directly of indirectly (systemic infection).

The urushiol can penetrate latex & rubber gloves. Use vinyl or leather gloves if you plan on handling it.

    _____________________________

The next class is The Usage of Permethrin for Tick & Mosquito Control on June 5th (with free wine tasting too).
    ______________________________

And lastly, if you feel it was worth it, and are feeling generous, donations are welcome, but are by no means required (donation link on left side of my meetup page: http://goo.gl/elA1r ).

    Thanks for coming.

An excellent presentation by someone who knows the subject well. I'm looking forward to learning more from Tom on his future meetups. I'm going to join his newly formed group right now.

I will have a few extra parking passes with me. But I will be inside the park, and I don't know if the parking booth will be open taking payments. If so, just tell them you're there for the poison oak class. It will PROBABLY get you in.

For anyone else who still has time, here's where you can find the parking pass: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7luV0KsLI8zX3hkSVlZSGRJMWc/edit?usp=sharing

My mom's chemo was changed to tomorrow. I am bummed. I am so allergic to this stuff that I need to learn as much as I can.

Up in the foothills on Wednesday and hiking we saw several different plants that did not look alike but which we thought might be poison oak. It would be great to be certain what is not poison oak.

After discussing this with you at last night's hike, I am really looking forward to this class and learning more. Looking forward to future classes.

Nancy, if you have time to cancel, that's fine, but if you're not sure until the last minute, then no worries. Hope your mother gets well.

Hi Tom, I look forward to the class. And, it will be the second day of Chemo for my 83 year old mother so if things are not going well on Monday, I will cancel to make room for others.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
