MT RALSTON---7.5 miles & 2650 vertical gain

Let's do a moderately-paced hike to the 9225 foot summit of Mt. Ralston.  Those who summit, or even get close to the top, will be rewarded with outstanding 360 degree views of lakes, peaks, and alpine scenery.  We may even catch a few early wildflowers blooming.

Hike is completely on trail, with no rock or scree scrambling.   Any remaining snow patches will present no problem  (I did this hike 3 weeks ago, and the snow has been melting fast since).

Although I will be hiking at a somewhat mellow pace, please assess your ability before deciding to attend.  Hike is very steep for about 3/4 mile during the middle portion of ascent.

WILL LEAVE PARK N RIDE BY 8:15am AT THE LATEST

SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING:

2-3 liters of water (there is no water source on hike, and it could be warm!), poles, sturdy boots or shoes, sunhat, light fleece, rain shell (thunderstorms possible), lunch, whistle, first aid & meds, sunscreen & lip-balm, camera, sunglasses.

DIRECTION TO TRAILHEAD:

--Will drive about 67 miles east on Hwy 50 to the trailhead, located at Camp Sacramento.

***Camp Sacramento is about 1 mile east of Twin Bridges, which is just east of the tiny town of Strawberry.   The last mile to the trailhead is slower and windy, and then you will see the sign "Camp Sacramento", so get into left turn lane and cross Hwy 50 to the parking lot on the north side.

I can be reached on my cell at (916)[masked] on this day....

    Hey Allan,
I drove from the bay area and got there after you'd left. But I made it to the top. In any case thanks for organizing the hike for without it I wouldn't have driven 4 hours to your neck of the woods!

Hey all. That was another great one! And the weather was perfect, a very nice time of year for it. Thanks for leading it Allan!

My best hike yet. I had a great time climbing up the steep portion of the hike and then had to walk through a lot of snow, and finally was rewarded with the breathtaking view at the peak. We even saw a bear on the way down. Allan, thank you SO MUCH for putting this one on. Really enjoyed it.

I don't see my name on the list. If I go up with a friend - is it possible to be a separate group of 2? How do you get a permit or do you need one?

    May 17, 2013

    • Rick S.

To followup on Allan's post above . . . anyone can hike on their own or with their own group, as long as you get a permit (which is free), and as long as you do not hike with our organized groups. Desolation Wilderness allows groups of no more than 12 in order to control impact on the wilderness area. So, . . . we hike in groups of no more than 12, with a permit. You may hike on your own, . . . but you need to be separate.

      May 17, 2013

  • Allan W.

For Inga, or anyone not officially on hikes: Please do not get your own permit to hike with either official group. We need to be respectful of the wilderness rules and this would defeat the purpose of hike limits and waiting lists. Thank you for your understanding.

Just to be clear - Do we meet at the Folsom Park & Ride at 8 a.m. or 7 a.m. for this second hiking group? Thanks.

    May 16, 2013

  • Pam

I just gotta spot for the 7am trip. I just have to say that Rick, Del Marie and Allan Rock! Thanks!

I unfortunately will not be able to go on this hike afterall. Hope someone else can enjoy it for me. Mickey

Would love to go on the earlier hike, but unless I'm missing something, I don't see it posted yet. Thanks.

    May 16, 2013

  • Christy

If the added group does end up having a 9 a.m. Folsom meeting time, I'd like to switch to that group. Also, I'm a "maybe" since I'm on call to work, but will know by Sat morning. So there's a chance that my spot might open up for someone.

    May 15, 2013

    • Rick S.

I'll be putting up another group for Ralston this evening, as per Allan's e-mail. However, we will be meeting at 7 AM in Folsom. I prefer an earlier start, and, IMHO, 9 AM is WAY too late to be leaving Folsom for a hike in the Sierra.

      May 16, 2013

    • Jean W

Unsure if you posted this second hike to begin at 7 am meeting place, but I'd love to be on the list.

  • inga o.

Thanks for organizing another group, because I think I am on the waiting list! I am an early bird. I would be happy to go at 7:00 a.m. or 8:15, but will go whenever. Thanks again!

    May 16, 2013

  • Victoria

I'd prefer 9am, too, if that's an option.

    May 15, 2013

  • Allan W.

Will be adding another group of 12 to allow more hikers to attend! Del Marie and Rick Shafer (thanks guys) have offered to help (organize) so more hikers can get on trail. Will figure out tomorrow and send e-mail by tomorrow. ***Wilderness group limit is 12!!! My officially allowed group is 16, but planning on splitting my group to have 4 go faster (leaving before main 12) or slower. Either way, will maintain distance as two distinct hiking groups. ****Assuming additional 12 on waiting list go with a second organizer, I would rather they leave Folsom at 9 am. But we'll work it out. Stay tuned....and sorry for confusion. Trying to get as many people responsibly, and legally, on the trail :)

Can they issue 2 permits and one of us can take on the next batch but stay together? Really there are a lot waiting. I can help Allan. Would be nice to see all join us and group the slow ones (me) with the other slow ones :)

    May 15, 2013

    • Rick S.

Two permits and staying together is a big no in Desolation Wilderness. There is a limit on group size to reduce impact, and they mean it. Just hang on a bit - I'll almost certainly set up a second hike with a meet time of 7 AM, but I want to talk to Allan before I post it.

      1 · May 15, 2013

  • Dave S.

Likewise, if a second hike works out, let me know. Thanks!

    May 15, 2013

  • Jean W

I'd be happy to meet with a second group at 7 am on Sunday to do this hike. Hope it works out. Thanks.

    May 15, 2013

  • Varya M

Hi Allan, is there any chance for a second group ? So many of us are on the waiting list & we would like so much to do this beautiful hike?

    May 15, 2013

    • Rick S.

I'll probably lead a second group with a meeting time of 7 AM. Stay tuned.

      May 15, 2013

    • Rick S.

Not quite yet, Susan, no. I'm not going to reserve spots before even setting up the hike. Sorry.

Sorry to back out, have fun

My weekend plans have changed and now I am not able to attend this event. Have fun everyone!

Yes I am in. I need to practice hiking before I hike the alps in Switzerland and Austria this summer :)
