Penner Lake and possibly on to Rock Lake (Grouse Ridge area) - Moderate

I did this hike about 7 years ago, and at this time of year it should be beautiful.  Penner Lake is going to be about 6 miles round trip.  If some of us decide to go on to Rock Lake that will make it about 8 miles round trip.  There will be a host of small lakes we will pass, and I'm looking to swim in at least one of them.  The elevation change will be from about 6,650 to 7,300.  Here is a link and a map of the hike I found posted; V\http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/1793274

If you sign up, please send me an email confirming that you are going to go.  I have no patience for people that sign up for hikes, especially when when there is a limit, and then don't show up.

SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING (Copied and pasted from from Allan Wiesman's meetups...): Cotton not recommended. 2 liters water, (I will have purification), light rain shell or fleece jacket for warmth in case of thunderstorms, sturdy shoes or boots,  pain meds and/or first aid, sunhat, sunscreen and lip-balm,  lunch, whistle, hiking poles, camera, cellphone, and mosquito repellent.  There will be mosquitoes.

Directions to trailhead

I-80 eastbound
Exit Hwy 20 westbound
Go four miles on Hwy 20
Go north on Bowman Lake Road
To reach Carr Lake, travel eight and four-tenths miles on Bowman Lake Road and turn east.
After traveling two miles the road forks.
The right fork leads to Carr Lake (seven-tenths mile)
Dirt parking lot

A high clearance vehicle is definitely recommended.  Although I have seen Hondas make it , there are a lot of pothole, rocks, and bumps.

Andrew, thanks for the reply to my question below! :-) I was a bit worried about the terrain because my hiking boots and some other gear haven't arrived yet from the east coast, so I changed my rsvp for this to no several days ago. Just wanted to be sure it registered as I would not want you to think I was a no show! Thanks so much,
    Barb

Whoops, accidentally hit the Enter button. I was going to say that we kind of got cut short by some rainy and windy weather, so I'm going to try it again as a loop trip, maybe even next weekend.

Excellent! I'll keep an eye out and do my best to join the hike this time. :)

I'm so glad I went on this beautiful hike. Lots of pretty lakes. Weather was conducive, even though it sprinkled while we had lunch. Thank you Andrew! Please post again.

Okay, my bad. And thank you Jean! So the updated address is above, and it's next to the Shell station (which is by the IN n Out Burger). Sorry about that!

I am attending. Are we meeting at the trailhead, or at 1555 Eureka Road, or somewhere else? Thanks!

Sunsplash Golfland? Near shell gas station????

      June 21, 2013

    • Jean

I think it's the one near Sunsplash Golfland. Taylor & Eureka. 1555 Eureka is not quite the address.

Hi! I haven't hiked this trail before and I am not familiar with the surface. Are Tivas okay footgear? Or are my hiking boots strongly advised due to sandy sloping surfaces? Thanks for any input.

Hey Barbara. I honestly don't know, as it's been quite a while since I've done this. But I don't remember anything too treacherous.

I suggest hiking boots. I did it last fall, and it's a typical mountain trail. IF you only go to Island Lake & hang out there, then tevas would be fine. I don't recommend it for the whole way.

I'd love to come to this, if anybody in Sacramento is willing to pick me up I can pitch in for gas :)

I need to ride with someone who has a high clearance vehicle. Anyone got room for me?

I've been to this area several times, but
Don't remember if there's cell reception there. Does anyone know?

    June 20, 2013

    • Andrew

I don't recall. My first guess would be no, but then again there are some peaks around that presumable have cell towers, so you may be okay. I know that didn't help much...

How sunny/shady is this hike? Is it appropriate for a 10yo?

    1 · June 20, 2013

    • Andrew

I remember it being pretty exposed, but it has been a while. I think a 10 year old will do fine, and don't worry about adding him/her to the RSVP.

I also need to carpool with someone if possible. I will be coming from Sacramento (land park area) and can drive to the Roseville location, but would need a ride to the trailhead since I have a little car. If anyone has room please let me know. Thank you!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
