I did this hike about 7 years ago, and at this time of year it should be beautiful. Penner Lake is going to be about 6 miles round trip. If some of us decide to go on to Rock Lake that will make it about 8 miles round trip. There will be a host of small lakes we will pass, and I'm looking to swim in at least one of them. The elevation change will be from about 6,650 to 7,300. Here is a link and a map of the hike I found posted; V\http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/1793274
If you sign up, please send me an email confirming that you are going to go. I have no patience for people that sign up for hikes, especially when when there is a limit, and then don't show up.
SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING (Copied and pasted from from Allan Wiesman's meetups...): Cotton not recommended. 2 liters water, (I will have purification), light rain shell or fleece jacket for warmth in case of thunderstorms, sturdy shoes or boots, pain meds and/or first aid, sunhat, sunscreen and lip-balm, lunch, whistle, hiking poles, camera, cellphone, and mosquito repellent. There will be mosquitoes.
Directions to trailhead
Exit Hwy 20 westbound
Go four miles on Hwy 20
Go north on Bowman Lake Road
To reach Carr Lake, travel eight and four-tenths miles on Bowman Lake Road and turn east.
After traveling two miles the road forks.
The right fork leads to Carr Lake (seven-tenths mile)
Dirt parking lot
A high clearance vehicle is definitely recommended. Although I have seen Hondas make it , there are a lot of pothole, rocks, and bumps.
